Kanye West has Graduation, and David Bowie has Tonight....

Both have problems aging well and are far away from the best thing either artist has done in their career.

I remember falling asleep because nothing interesting was happening in the record, instrumentals really sound 30 years old and for a while I had taken that as a bad thing, but now I find it more charming than anything else.

It's a guilty pleasure now but whatevs

And I don't think the hate is justified.
I think the only reasonable explanation for this album was Bowie saying "Well I've done ambient music, I've done funk rock, I've done dance pop, I've done WORLD music... ooh, haven't done pop reggae and random covers yet."

To be fair, this album isn't the absolute worst thing ever. At least I don't think so. But compared to even his last album, this is a major dip in quality. I don't exactly know what Bowie was going for on this album. Was it pop rock? Was it reggae? Was it ... read more
Tonight is Bowie's first major dip in quality, and definitely his worst record to this point since his debut. I feel like this isn't quite as bad as his debut, but this was still tough to sit through.

There were some good moments on this album. Loving The Alien, although it's far from my favourite Bowie song, did remind me of some of his better moments. I remember listening a lot to this record when i was about 10 years old in my dad´s car. With him. He always loved music and taught me how to enjoy the details of difficult harmonies and dance with the punch of direct melodic lines. In this beggining year, when we saw Bowie return to the planet he came from, i, now in my middle tirties, am totally sure that "Tonight" drove me into this persona´s world, giving me the tips to want to discover day-by-day the path an artist ... read more
