The Aussie psych-rock group’s fifth album of 2017 is anything but a tossed-off afterthought, showing a new dedication to pop craftsmanship.

The Needle Drop

Though not stylistically consistent, Gumboot Soup is one of the strongest batches of songs King Gizzard put out in 2017.

Gumboot Soup, from what I can gather, is basically a mix of all their different sounds and musical styles, having elements from pretty much every album. I mean, christ, they even have track that inspired Infest The Rats Nest! Tracks like Greenhouse Heat Death and The Great Chain Of Being sound like songs that could easily be on that album, with the extremely hard guitars and Stu's growling vocals. I mean, if anything, this album is more of a collection of tracks than anything. It's a big mix of ... read more

GREAT

Gumboot Soup has always been an oddity to me. It's an incredibly interesting album for some reason, and through all the phases I've gone through with King Gizzard, it has always stood out. Before I was even a fan of the band, Gumboot Soup's album cover was always the first image I associated with them when I heard their name. After becoming a fan, it stood out as their poppiest album of 2017 that lacked cohesion and focus. After becoming an even bigger fan, it stood out as one of their ... read more

This album is definitely feels like a "soup" of an album, at least for King Gizzard because it is a mix of a bunch of styles they had done previously and some new ideas as well. Maybe they're b-sides or just some demos that they revined, either way they're great.

Tracks like Greenhouse Heat Death, Muddy Water and All Is Known would fit nicely into some of their more recent albums but then you have Superposition and Great Chain of Being that are totally new beasts for King Gizzard. ... read more

It's almost time, we are close to wrapping up this entry in this series, we have 2 more left after the final of the 2017 albums Gumboot Soup. With Gumboot Soup we King Gizz make a pretty straightforward psych rock album that incorporates elements of styles that they've done up to this point like mellow psychedelia and standard psych garage but there's also ... read more

in anticipation of INFEST THE RAT'S NEST tomorrow, i thought i'd review a Gizz album! i couldn't decide which one to do, so i randomized it and got Gumboot Soup. Gumboot has never been one of my favorite Gizz releases - i crave the more cohesive album experiences than what's essentially a b-sides record. however, they're still fucking King Gizzard. even their b-sides are pretty incredible, so while it's not gonna place very high in my personal favorite Gizz records, it's still an album ... read more
