It sounds like something terrible is going on in the room next to me. I can't see it, but the sound of whatever horrors are transpiring is enough to let my mind fill in the blanks, creating something that might be even more frightening than the actual event.

Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass and it's just noise...

I like this type of metal but something is lacking in this album. The technical ability is there, they do have a good vocalist and the songs are dark and terrifying but it feels like something is lacking...

Maybe I'm having trouble grasping the entirety of this project, but this is hardly horrifying, or enjoyable. The vocalist sounds as if he's gasping for air, and the instrumentals are more just blatant noise to me. Most frustrating listen I've had to endure.

It gets the horror part well so I'll give it a decent score but this not my kind of record at all. I get physically sick listening to these kind of records. I'd recommend if you like the genre but um...

Portal are back to wreak havoc on our ears! The anonymous Australians continue to hone their take on death metal, pushing the boundaries further and further. After the two minute intro, 'ESP ION Age' begins in an unrelenting frenzy that never seizes for the remainder of the album.

There's a certain eariness to the album, which is further perpetuated through Portal's unhinged style and experimentation with their instruments. They have perfected creating an atmosphere in their music, largely ... read more

This album is proof that experimentation doesn't always make for good music.

Ion shows us a new territory in metal that is utterly barren and is in desperate need for civilization. This album by Portal approaches metal in an almost jazz-like way, so it quite bothered me that I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. There's a lot going on here, such as sporadic and zig-zaggy guitar transitions, each riff zanier than the last. However, the unpredictable nature of what should at least once in a ... read more

The groups best work yet! This album improves on nearly everything they have done up to this point whether it's the technical abilities of these musicians or just a general feeling. This album feels and sounds are bleak, dystopian, crisp, foreboding and much more. It's raw, unhinged terror thrown at the listener. The instrumentation this time around is a lot more unique and at times quite mind-blowing such as on the song "Spores". The songs are structured this time with pay-off unlike ... read more

Though Metal is not my strongsuit this album really took me by surprise. Absolutely one of the most pummeling and dark albums of the year.

The sounds that come through on this album are so interesting and strange, but also fucking scary. A very intense album that has an incredible uneasy and hellish atmosphere.

Best Tracks: Phreqs, Crone, and Olde Guarde

These drums are awful.

Edit: I can’t even tell songs apart there is just so much shit thrown at the wall

However it’s an absolute experience to say the least

If you like mysterious vomiting noises with cool guitar, then this album is cool. Will likely be popular with the boys who wear all black and look like skeletons who smell like weed and smegma.

Portal’s album “Ion” is perhaps one of the most terrifying metal albums I have heard. With blistering and scorching guitars and bass, vigorous and relentless drumming, and the wispy and hoarse growls of the vocalists all come together to create a caustic and dizzying experience. There are also several noisy passages of synthetic origin or taken from altered samples which do well to offer as transitions or introductions while never losing the ghastly atmosphere of the album. ... read more

One of the more intricate death metal albums you'll hear. Portal's Ion contorts in various, complex forms paired with barreling vocals that'll shake your skin loose. It's a haunting experience.

ION is the equivalent of falling into a bottomless pit while on LSD.

There are no melodies, no hooks, and no real grooves to be found on Ion, and, to my ears, all of the tracks sound fairly homogeneous. Maybe that is purposeful, as it is supposed to be a heavy, all-consuming metal record, so maybe Portal have no use for these traditionally pop music elements. However, I really did not feel as if the album was recorded in a way that makes it feel heavy at all. In fact, due to the awful recording, the record really carries nearly no weight at all, and any ... read more

Am I missing something? No, really, am I missing something? For the most part, I enjoyed, even loved the bands frantic energy and explosive sound, with each musician really giving their all. The drums are insanely good and so is the guitar work, with the two harmonizing guitars working fantastically for the sound of the group. Plus, the vocals are extremely unique, with a more wispery approach, creating a tense atmosphere. But... I'm sorry but I really hate how this album sounds. I don't mean ... read more

I'm not the biggest fan of death metal but I'll tell you something, I've heard enough of the genre to know when it gets repetitive and the thing with Ion is that its moments of genius are short. Portal gives some of the most interesting ideas I've heard when it comes to the concept of an album, there's a lot of alarms, fear and electronic devices shooting in musical chaos. However, almost all of the tracks can't keep the momentum, like they start pretty well and then it feels tiring somehow. ... read more

With this newest Portal record Ion my promises came true as they improve a lot more than their last record Vexovoid. This record is more terrifying, disguising and revolting. The underground Australian tech death metal band has always went under the radar but with this album, i hope they get more exposure.

Edit: this grew one me more, one word to describe this album is ""suffocation"". It's a beast on its own.
