Ignore the awful cover art, what Danny Brown gives here is a pretty fun, interesting and fun hip-hop record, but with the added bonus that it's headed by one of the more interesting voices in hip-hop. In a lot of ways this reminds me of Childish Gambino's debut record, as it's not the best produced (with most of the beats sounding kinda store bought and out of place, and most of the songs let the beat ring out for far too long), written or interesting album in Danny Browns discography, but it's ... read more
I actually wasn't expecting much from this considering it came out before XXX which was his breakout project, but it was way better than I expected. The production was a little inconsistent, but there were some undeniable highlights like Exotic, Nowhere 2 Go & Drinks On Me (which was definitely my fav track on the project, love how personal he gets on this one). the hybrid presents a rougher, more scattered danny brown than what is found on his more recent projects. however, this is also the first time that his talent on the mic is shown to fans, and his vocal skills are in great form. many of his lyrics are juvenile and forgettable, but the get to be a lot more conscious and personal in the 2nd half (as he almost always splits albums between carefree party tracks and tracks about his life and experiences). i was really digging the production on ... read more
This project is very slept on by many Danny Brown fans. Definitely a great start to a polarising but very interesting and adventurous artist! This is very aggressive and is here where we start to see Brown familiarizing himself with the rap game. Some beats and Danny Brown's delivery is not as furnished as later records, but was a sign of what's to come.
Basically the classic Hip Hop schtick (even with a latin Hip Hop feeling sometimes!) but with Danny Brown in it. And it's wonderful.
