If Async was an album centered on the genesis of its creator's suffering and recovery, Remodels is the triumph over the odds put up against Sakamoto and his way of continuing to share his life's work with the world through the lens of his disciples and his contemporaries.

Neither a remix nor a remodel, even less a tribute to an inspiration, these songs sound the same yearning breathed in different breaths.

What's remarkable about the LP is that most of its 11 artists—whether newcomers, collaborators or longtime fans—all make tracks that sound like natural extensions of the originals.
The collection ultimately ends up feeling like a tribute as well as a remix album, serving to highlight Sakamoto's considerable influence on generations of forward-thinking electronic musicians.

Async: Remodels is more likely to serve as handsome background music than a tool to convert the uninitiated. But that's not to say that it can't happen.

Hear me out. There exists a special song. A song that was created by the great Ryuichi Sakamoto. A song that was placed on his best album, async. These remodels uphold the standard of the orginal LP, while further stepping inward to the piece of work in question. Its always wonderful when artists work on each others work, not only can you hear the orginal songs structure being expanded upon and more deeply visited but you also hear the distinct style that the specific artist brings to the remodel, The difference between OPN & Johann Johannsson are vast, but you have to pay close attention to hear those differences a wonderous irony. ... read more
