Who'd have though we'd live to see a day when Jack Black makes better music than Jack White? What a time to be alive.

LONG FORM REVIEW:

“Rock is dead.” A phrase that is all too often thrown around.

In the past 30 years, rock has steadily declined in prominence, with adult-alternative bands, like Train and Maroon 5, and arena rock/electro-pop fusion bands, such as Coldplay and Imagine Dragons, continuing to water down the once highly name of rock music. While many have hailed traditionalist bands such as Greta Van Fleet (and Tame Impala, to a certain extent) as the 'saviors of rock,' I believe ... read more

Boarding House Reach? more like... BORING HOUSE REACH!!! HAHAHaaaaa

Edit: Original Score 71. I have good days with this album and bad days. It’s overall an extremely coherent experience that works in a very avant-garde way. I kinda like it

I can definitely appreciate the experimentation and the decision to do something more daring this time around, but it all just feels too uncalculated and inconsequential for me to pull anything from it. Whilst Blunderbuss & Lazaretto were definitely much safer albums, I think they had a lot more going for them in regards to quality grooves/hooks & songwriting, this just feels hollow and disassembled by comparison, couldn't get into it.

It's not what people expected, but Boarding House Reach shows Jack White's knack for experimentation. And the result is a brilliant, challenging, mind-bending and extremely creative feast for the ears. Though according to the album art, not for the eyes.

Fav Tracks: Over and Over and Over, Corporation, Ice Station Zebra, Hypermisophoniac, Respect Commander, Humoresque, Connected By Love, Get In The Mind Shaft

If it wasn't for my undying love for Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven, this would be my hotest hot take. The spiciest salami on the shelf.

The """"'experimentation"""' here is the obitamy of "If I call my garbage experimental, people might think it's good!" Judging by how mixed the most popular reviews are it's clear that people think the same. It's either experimental, or it's horseshit. This album features profound moments of genius like Jack White, ... read more

Easily one of the most exciting album to come out this year so far, for me personally. I feel ever since the separation of The White Stripes, Jack has yet to match the explosive catchiness that he seemed to burst with Meg by his side; here, he doesn't just match it, he exceeds it. I personally don't think rock will ever die (or at least I hope), but it's easy to see why it has fell off the top in popularity, and hip-hop has taken it's place; modern rock is too obsessed with it's past, whilst ... read more

Ok so , i guess some of you are gonna be furious about this but I tried to understand the hate around the album but..I just love it sorry about that.

I just love everything about this album , I've already listened to this album 3 times and im listening to it while I'm writting this.

I love the jazzy , sometimes heavy but always mind-blowing and avant gardes interludes like Abulia (which is my least favorite track), Why Walk like a Dog (this song has a metaphoric signification about the human ... read more

Only based on first listen, but it felt enough to know what score it deserved for me. Can't see myself returning to the album other than the singles that were released prior to it coming out.

EDIT: Does have some good tracks and maybe isn't the complete mess I first thought it was but still... Biggest shock of 2018 was Fantano giving this a 9.

At a point in his career where it looked like he hadn't much more left to showcase, Jack White comes out with one of his most creative and off-the-wall records yet. Boarding House Reach translates as a deep dive into his mind, exploring all of the crazy ideas that are there, without any limitations.
This is just like breaking with the routine life for a while to have some fun doing whatever you want to.

Jack White is most definitely one of the more creative, out there and experimental guitarists around today, and it's shown in full awe and shock on his new solo record. Jack White takes as any risks here as humanly possible, taking on a David Bowie-esq persona and giving us a full tour into his mind. From rock stompers to calming interludes to strange sonic experiments, Jack White has given us possibly the most experimental major rock album of 2018.

Jack White shows the world why he's one of rock's legends with Boarding House Reach.

Anthemic songwriting with classic structures touched with some distorted guitars and electronic layers that serve as an ugly corsage on the messy suit of this album make this one of Jack White's weirdest releases.

The first two tracks provide kind of a slow and boring start to the album, while still feeling the way a rock album should feel, but once we get to Corporation, we understand what direction the rest ... read more

Todo hasta llegar a "Over and Over and Over". Posterior a eso, la experimentación le pasa la cuenta a las composiciones, convirtiéndose en piezas menos y menos memorables de escuchar. La ... read more

It's kind of sad that the review that I was most happy with during writing is the one that I disagree with the most. This album grabbed me after the third listen and I don't why but I've become addicted to this thing. I've played this album 9 times in full and every time I have enjoyed the hell out of it. There are still some moments that slightly irritate me, but on the whole this album is stunning.

The biggest slap in the face for me in 2018, in a really good way. This record has been in constant rotation since it released, and that’s insane because I was not looking forward to it at all. BHR is Jack White at his most unorthodox and the bizarre, manic, and sometimes harsh nature of this project is absolutely arresting in almost every facet. Jack has always acted eccentric, but that quality was never really apparent when it came to his actual music for me, and it wasn’t until ... read more

Boarding House Reach is an album I almost feel differently about every listen. There are some very fresh and forward thinking rock sounds on this album, but it’s full potential is hindered by an overarching sense of boredom and indulgence. The awkward structure and songwriting on certain tracks don’t help this album either. While containing some truly commendable moments, as an album, it just doesn’t live up. It’s like an architect building an amazing castle, but instead ... read more

Am I the mad one? A lot of people rate this album really poorly and I can't seem to understand why. In my opinion this project is exceptional. Beautiful instrumentation, production and really creative use of song structure / subverting expectation.

I don't think the first portion of the album is meant to be taken too seriously. It's fun and lighthearted at its best but at worst it borders on corny (back-up vocals on "Connected by Love" for example). "Abulia and Akrasia" ... read more

Reminds me of 22, A Million. It may be extremely polarizing for a bulk of his audience, but that may be why it's so commendable, and so necessary. The difference between this and 22, A Million, though, is I really respect this but really dislike it. 22, A Million on the other hand is incredible to me

If you're looking for a way for your White Stripes itch to be scratched, you're most likely not going to find it in Boarding House Reach. After an initial listen, you might actually be left angry or very disappointed with what you heard. This happened to me alright, and it seemed to also have happened with quite a few other people on this site. For me, all you need to enjoy this album is some reason to go back to it and adapt to Jack White's new experimental rock sound, if you do enjoy some ... read more

Although the cover art is abysmal, the album itself is not. I have never listened to Jack White before this, except some singles but this is a fun album, with neat experimentation. Lyrics were a bit lackluster.

I really enjoyed Hypermisophoniac and Ice Station Zebra but found the first few tracks bad.

My favorite album of 2018. And unpopular opinion: This is Jack White’s best work to date. This entire century we’ve had artist attempt to continue and keep rock alive by pathetically copying formulas or taking the corny alt-rock pathway. Jack White has managed to use elements of what made rock amazing and combine them with various of genres to create something absolutely revolutionary. Instrumentally challenging and lyrically investing. If I by the record for it, you know it’s ... read more

Phew talk about a polarising album lmao, this thing comes after two decent but relatively uninteresting solo albums from White, and features a much more diverse palette of instrumentation with some incredibly unorthodox production layered across the tracks. Embracing synth baselines and electronic soundscapes, this is White at his most experimental, and honestly? It works. It shouldn't do, but it does.

"Connected by love" is a soaring and thumping rock tune, that builds up over a ... read more

Unbelievable. Finally, jack white has moved on from the White Stripes’ garage rock streak! Do I like that? I can’t say I do. Is he becoming a little more experimental? If you would call White screaming like a kazoo at the end of “Corporation”, then yes. Really, only tracks I enjoyed on Jack White’s third album were the fast moving “Over And Over And Over”, And (kazoo shrieks aside) “Corporation”. Jack, I’m sorry, but blunderbuss was ... read more

a true blast of ideas, going from the most beautiful ballad, to really energetic rock songs, to a total experimental madness, all of them being carried excellently through the album.
I love this project because is an expression of total freedom from the artist, it's probably the closest we will ever get from entering in his mind

The man, the myth and the legend is back with a killer third studio album since The White Stripes departed and in my absolute opinion, it’s his best release since, with Lazaretto being a close second. In Boarding House Reach, we get to see Jack White in a completely different light. He’s comfortable making this music and his has found a lot of new influences to inspire the writing of this album. It’s not received the best of reviews as it’s his most eccentric work yet, ... read more

The only fun and interesting Jack White solo project. He finally stepped away from drab blues rock and made something with actual character. I hope he continues down this creative road.

This album is most definitely not it. The "experiments" taken on this album just flat out sound bad but Jacks guitar skills make it worthwhile at points.

Experimental, ambitious and strung out, most of these tracks either sit really well or are just complete misses. Sounds like a film score more than an album.

I'm not sure as to why this album is garnering hate. What did people expect, another watered-down White Stripes-like Jack White album. Sorry he didn't do that. After two solo albums that were okay but left a lot to be desired, Jack White comes back with an experimental album that experiments on not only his usual sound that he couldn't seem to stray away from, but his own personal image. With stellar production, clever songwriting and intricate instrumentation, Jack White has given us his best ... read more
