Basically Illinois but a more earthy grounded feel, compared to the dramatic nature of the following project. This is a grower and I had to listen a few times to actually remember the songs. It's still a really solid project. The songwriting isnt as good as illinois tho.
in the first of his albums titled after a state, sufjan stevens does what he does best, and it really works out well. his vocals are his usual, majestic, soft sounds, but what really was spectacular about Michigan was the instrumentation. there was a mix of an awesome variety of strings, brass, and other unconventional instruments, which made this one of stevens' LPs that was a lot different sound wise. he continues to give good music throughout his discography, and that is why sufjan ... read more

I’ve never been to Michigan, although I *have* been to Minnesota and Wisconsin. I do get those vibes here, so I can only guess that Sufjan captured the beauty and serene landscape of the state itself. This is the best Sufjan Stevens album in my opinion, for its pure blissful sound and subtle experimentation passes his others in quality.
