Basically Illinois but a more earthy grounded feel, compared to the dramatic nature of the following project. This is a grower and I had to listen a few times to actually remember the songs. It's still a really solid project. The songwriting isnt as good as illinois tho.
Absolutely beautiful from the instrumentals to Sufjan Stevens' soft spoken vocal performance for quite an emotional and cold albumbut yet the soundscape brings such comfortable and warm it is majestic in the way this album is crafted and I shall always stand by that Flint is the best Sufjan Stevens track.

Sufjan Stevens brings an incredible sound on his third LP, Michigan, and for the first time really sounds like himself. This isn’t just a hindsight statement looking at where his music would follow over the next two decades; you feel a more genuine sincerity behind these songs, as they are song from a place of true personality and experience. Much like his Illinois album that came a few years later, the only of two that would fall into his state-based concept albums, there is a true sense ... read more
