Sub Rosa gives its artists all the space they want to exercise a concept; this can lead to albums that feel a little overstuffed or indulgent, but in the case of Winter Family, it has yielded two discs full of beautiful music.

Walls exercises a sure grasp on the current pop moment, which means having a pinky on disco/'80s electro and a thumb on current hip-hop, while palming everything in between.

His successful excision and underscoring of milliseconds of existing works makes you realize that one song can contain the splinters of a thousand others. That’s the revelatory aspect of Wilner’s work for me, what lends his gorgeous aerial tableaux an aspect of the sublime.

This is a record that only Darnielle could pull off: in the hands of a less skilled writer and vocalist, it would fall flat or grate the nerves as so much hyperemotional posturing.
