10. James Blake - Assume Form

January 18, 2019
Critic Score
34 reviews

Assume Form doesn’t have the instant gratification of his 2013 album, Overgrown – arguably his best – but it gradually pulls you in like a soothing balm. Blake builds sonic worlds that are heavily distorted, jarring and abrasively unnatural, but on this album he’s pared down his more experimental tendencies for a safer, more palatable sound.

9. Kim Gordon - No Home Record

October 11, 2019
Critic Score
24 reviews

7. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising

April 5, 2019
Critic Score
27 reviews

Titanic Rising is a leap forward for the self-described “nostalgic futurist,” yet Mering’s core musical gifts remain intact.

5. Angel Olsen - All Mirrors

October 4, 2019
Critic Score
32 reviews

The songs are devastating, but also nourishing: it’s a whole new version of Olsen.

4. Solange - When I Get Home

March 1, 2019
Critic Score
23 reviews

Songs play out like mantras, her rawness manifesting as repetition.

3. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains

July 12, 2019
Critic Score
17 reviews

Beyond the amber waves of grain, Purple Mountains offer fans a feast of food for thought.

2. Tyler, the Creator - IGOR

May 17, 2019
Critic Score
21 reviews

In a tight but varied 39 minutes, Tyler is exploring the sonic terrain in Flower Boy with a narrative concept that, like a non-relationship, feels endless and all-encompassing, then hard not to put on repeat.

1. FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
