23. Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High

February 6, 2007
Critic Score

FOB could've cut an album's worth of club hits and still found an audience. Its refusal to do so shows it still knows the difference between selling records and making fans.

7. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black

October 27, 2006
Critic Score
79
18 reviews

There's something beguilingly perverse about the incongruity between Winehouse's trifling lyrical concerns and Back To Black's wall-of-sound richness.

6. M.I.A. - Kala

August 21, 2007
Critic Score
85
25 reviews

The sound and chaotic vocalizing prove sketchy to the end, but M.I.A. announces herself as a serious artist who's wise to the push-pull ways of pop seduction.

5. Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

October 9, 2007
Critic Score
75
14 reviews

While his band's sophomore effort, Cease To Begin, doesn't deviate much from its excellent 2006 debut, Everything All The Time, the record's relaxed, understated grace is distinctively Southern in its lack of self-consciousness.

4. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

March 20, 2007
Critic Score
85
25 reviews

Sure, lots of other people have done this lately, but few do it with Murphy's flair.

3. Radiohead - In Rainbows

October 10, 2007
Critic Score
88
25 reviews

This is still the Radiohead that finds straight-ahead pop structures gauche or just plain tired ... That said, In Rainbows takes tenuous steps back toward more straightforward territory, though with nothing as obvious as a verse-chorus-verse to speak of.

2. The National - Boxer

May 22, 2007
Critic Score
85
21 reviews

Boxer is even more measured and seemingly mellow than 2005's incredible Alligator, but bubbling under the dark, glassy surface are smart, engaging songs that will stay imprinted on brains when others' weightless melodies are relegated to memory's attic.

1. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

March 6, 2007
Critic Score
85
25 reviews

Through Neon Bible, the band is seemingly sending a beacon to other reasonable people forced underground by the world's insanity.
