I think admin should add Uproxx Music Critics Poll, this one is different from their usual year-end list. For the record, this is their third year doing such poll involving 200+ music critics from various publications (Rolling Stone, AllMusic, Pitchfork, NME etc.). It's similar to Pazz & Jop which no longer existed, it's too big to be ignored.
you only update english music websites right? I don't think it's fair to exclude websites like Jenesaispop just bc it's not from usa or uk tbh... that makes this list less beliavable
Speaking of Earbuddy situation, I suggest admin needs to make this clear and strict rule so there's no more debates/arguments in the future :
- Critics/staff/writers/editors consensus should be the one counted for the aggregate
- If there's no such consensus then, individual lists are allowed as long as they are not more than 3 (Variety and The New York Times as max indicator)
In my opinion, the Earbuddy exclusion for this year is controversial and questionable considering the admin did count Variety and The New York Times (3 individual lists) meanwhile The New Yorker and Sound Opinions (2 individual lists). The bias and personal preference are there no offense.
These publications were included last year and have released their lists for some time now. hope you consider.

The criteria for how to determine whether a source is eligible should be revealed when we search the internet for new lists to make AOTY more reliable.

HMV have submitted their Best Albums of 2020 (All albums are on a Virtual Book...Fiona Apple is ultimately their Album of The Year)

Indiehoy (one of Argentina’s and South America’s most important music related news website) released their top 50 albums of the year. The top ten is being added this Friday (tomorrow). It would be cool if it considered them for the year end aggregate so we can have more diversity of voices.
Hi, sorry, but Fiona's still listed as a second place in the Variety list by Chris Willman, when she's actually tied in number 1 with Taylor Swift's records.
It would be nice if we could use this space to actually comment on the albums on the sites aggregate, rather than complaining about which lists we feel should have been included. Kind of frustrating that so many of the comments are from new users who have scored just a couple albums (or none even) but have added nothing else to the site. Be an active remember of the community. Try listening to some recommended albums that you've never heard before. Life is pretty boring if your just looking for nothing else but to reinforcement of your taste.
@Rob Why the AOTY doesn't count Rob Sheffield list as a separate list of RS as you do with every website? It is an important list from the site and it counts for Metacritic's aggregate
Everyone needs to calm down. If The LA Times is not seen as worthy to be included, it can be excluded. We are not running this website and aren't making the decisions.
That being said, The LA Times (with the same author) was included last year, so if it was seen as worthy/reputable enough the last time, I don't see any rational reason why it would not be included this time too.
It most likely just takes time to add all these lists, and there have been quite a few new ones today.
The past couple of years AOTY has included ~ 130 lists, we're basically a 1/3 of the way there and RTJ4 hasn't had a single #1 placement! It's not my personal fav for 2020, but i'm still baffled...
It’s amazing that new people keep signing up and recommending we add various lists to the site... it’s almost like one person is creating multiple accounts or something 🤔
in regards to people mentioning/complaining about the early lists. This is pretty typically stuff... first off, usually dec isn't jammed packed with big time releases for this reason... Also keep in mind that more often than not pro critics get albums in advance of the release date (this is typically how "leaks" happen). Its not like AOTY, where every Friday people get all these new albums and "review" them after initial listens. Presumably, a pro critic will get ample time with an album before the release date/the review drops. I think some publications are dropping lists a little early each year, but don't expect this to change.
Something more on topic with this page: I'm really happy to see Chloe & Halle's "Ungodly Hour" in the top 20. That one is truly such a beautiful album from beginning to end. I hope it can stay in the top 20/30 when all is said and done, it would really deserve it.
Also not surprised to see Fiona's at the top, "Fetch" was a fantastic record (even if I personally preferred her previous album), but this was expected after the raves it got earlier this year:
I know that we're only 21 lists in and 2019 had 128 by the end, but i'm surprised RTJ4 hasn't had a 1st place yet. It kind of looks like Fiona Apple is gonna sweep, a bit like Kendrick did in 2015
I'm sorry if I've missed something, but why Dylan's album has 31 points and its score points out only 27? By the way, this is happening with other albums also.
I think admin should fix the current point system for unranked list. Points should be credited based on list size i.e. each album get 5 points if the list consists 10 or lower albums. 3 points if the list having 25 or lower albums. 1 point if the list bigger than 25 albums. Like other members pointed out, the current aggregate is less accurate due to this bias.
Is it possible to give every one of bbc culture’s entries a top ten vote instead of other? Since they only rated 9 albums it would improve the aggregate’s accuracy a bit.
What's wrong with these guys at Decibel? They completely ignored the best album of the year by Phoebe? Even though it should definitely qualify for "Doom Metal", being entitled "Punisher"!
