St. Vincent - Daddy's Home
70

Daddy's Home is a vibrant and trippy, yet nostalgic cut of soul with an interesting aesthetic. Although she doesn't break too many boundaries, St. Vincent creates a pretty decent set of songs. My only complaints are that some of the songs blend together a little bit due to vast similarities, and also the ending of the album is fairly awkward. At The Holiday Party is easily the best song to close the album, but Vincent closes it out with Candy Darling and an interlude..? Aside from that, I ... read more

Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR
40

SOUR, more like SWEET lol.

Okay, let's get this over with. I couldn't avoid Rodrigo. She's been the most talked about artist of 2021, and with the mainly positive reviews for SOUR I've been curious about her music to say the least. I listened to driver's license but then immediately forgot about it because it bored me to death. Olivia gave off an angsty teen 'I hate stupid teenage boyfriends' vibes, and this album epitomises that. She was literally 17 when she wrote most of SOUR's content, ... read more

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
70

No Love Deep Web is penis music at its finest. It's one of the most irritable and simple Death Grips albums of the lot, but it still manages to impress and completely distort music to its very twisted ends. Its repetitive electronic stuff isn't utilised in a Money Store kind of way. Instead, its formed through killing any sense of musicality that's humanly possible and making it probably the most unbearable of Grips albums because of how annoying it is. It's like a tiny itch that you ... read more

OutKast - Aquemini
95

Yes. Yes. Yes.

I always felt like Stankonia was a little too cluttered. It's good, but there was a lot of filler and unnecessary stuff all throughout the listening. But Aquemini is a much more focused and consistent project. The skits are attached to the ends of songs and they aren't as irritating as Stank's, and the song quality on Aquemini is INFINITELY better than the Stank songs too. There's a reason that this is a classic, and it's because it's utterly sensational. The duo pulls out some ... read more

I love the word wonky. It's such a simple yet funny word that somehow accurately describes stuff that's slightly off. You're Dead! is very off, and therefore very wonky. Calling something a wonky album gives me a sense of joy that I can't describe. You know what else I can't describe? You're Dead! How do you even begin to explain this thing? Where do you start and end? Can this even be classified as music when compared to other albums? Man it's weird.

I love it.

But I can talk about Never ... read more

El-P - Fantastic Damage
55

I commend El-P for developing a greatly received underground hip hop record of bombastic proportions, but his solo delivery feels very barren and aimless, and Fantastic Damage feels like it's compensating for quality in terms of more noise and weirdness.

The production on this is staggering, but sometimes it can get a little same old same old. As with El-P? I literally don't know what this guy is doing. He's gone absolutely bat shit, spewing out random lines at random times and it's semi ... read more

SAULT - Untitled (Rise)
65

This album kind of rose out of nowhere. It's a quirky little album that delves mainly into race, which was the inescapable topic that defined 2020. It's got a few potent and powerful messages stringed alongside very glossy and funky instrumentals. It also has some spoken word stuff that helps to solidify the messages of the album such as on the comedic yet harshly truthful You Know It Ain't.

The problem that Untitled (Rise) has however is its forgettability. It doesn't feel like an album you ... read more

Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind
75

Yves is like a trippier Prince, with their glaring guitar and raspy vocals. I can totally see where they want to go on Heaven To A Tortured Mind, and I can get on board with most tracks, but at times Yves falters in terms of weaker tracks that can't stand up to the others on the listing. At times it feels like they drive off on a very strange road that leads to literally nowhere. Still though, it's a weird yet fantastical album that is pretty enjoyable.

Carly Rae Jepsen - E•MO•TION
90

E•MO•TION is a great pop album from an artist that was once coined as a one hit wonder. This album surprised me greatly in how it hooked me onto its sound, and it's a solid collection of tracks that have helped towards the revival of synth pop, especially in the mainstream pop scene.

The unique thing that I've noticed Carly does when compared to other pop artists, especially female ones, is that she holds back on her voice. She doesn't have an urge to constantly belt out the highest ... read more

Death Grips - Exmilitary
95

Ow.

Exmilitary bursts Death Grips onto the music scene with the best mixtape that I've ever heard. Their usage of distorted and screaming sounds with Ride's utter vocal insanity would unknowingly pave the path for experimental hip hop to come, and ever since Exmilitary's release, no album has managed to match its crazed and unleashed status. It's raw, evil and yet infinitely fascinating.

I dare you to try and find a better 5 songs to open an album with. Those songs create an impossible to ... read more

Kanye West - Yeezus
90

I somehow forgot to review every album from my favourite artist of all time, so here's the final one (other than 'the album that shall not be named' of course). Yeezus perfectly combines an abrasive and destructive industrial style with Kanye's slower and more lyrical focused bars. Yeezus is gloriously disgusting in some of its one liners, such as the current best Kanye lyric of 'Put my fist in her like the civil rights sign', but it's oddly beautiful too. Kanye goes on a personal journey on ... read more

Rapsody - Eve
80

Eve is waaaay too long, but it's massively appreciated for its praising of the powerful black women in history that have helped to break down the prejudiced barriers in society. Musically, Eve doesn't do anything ground breaking or mind boggling, but Rapsody produces some bangers with great messages as well as incredible beats.

She samples from the likes of Nina Simone and even Phil Collins (??!!), enhancing the album's creativity by a significant amount. It's hard not to feel empowered by ... read more

100 gecs - 1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues
70

What is music.

I would've given it a 100 if instead of Lil West on the gecgecgec remix it was DaBaby.

Favourite Song: hand crushed by a mallet (Fall Out Boy)

Best: Money Machine (A.G. Cook), ringtone (Charli XCX), gec 2 Ü (Danny L Harle Harlecore), 800db cloud (Ricco Harver), ringtone (umru), xXXi_wud_nvrstøp_ÜXXx (Tommy Cash), gecgecgec (Lil West), hand crushed by a mallet (nothankyou), came to my show, toothless

Worst: stupid horse (GFOTY)

Injury Reserve - Floss
80

OH SHIT!!!!!

Floss is a bombastic and explosive mixtape from the hip hop trio Injury Reserve. It peaks when it's delving into its crazy and wild experimental takes, but it unfortunately falters slightly in its repetitiveness of topics and when the experiments go a bit down south.

But man, Oh Shit!!! is an incredible opener. I'm a huge fan of acoustic rap, so combining unsettling horror-core like piano twangs with a trap beat was mind blowing to me. But the acoustic rap doesn't stop there, as ... read more

CZARFACE & MF DOOM - Super What?
60

Super What? is obviously garnering relative attention due to it being DOOM's first posthumerous presence, but honestly CZAR puts in some solid work. This is the first time I've heard Mr. FACE, and upon first impressions he's like if Jay-Z rapped faster and was a comic book nut. Still though, both rappers put in decent effort into a decent album, but there's unfortunately not much worth remembering on here. It's a simple comic book rap album.

The standouts for this album are the vocals. The ... read more

Mac Miller - Swimming
70

A sweet, pleasant penultimate swim for Mac. It beautifully moulds together genres and breaks boundaries that only Mac could break. I unfortunately don't have many words for this album apart from it's pretty good. The way that he conveys emotions and how he raps in such unfitting ways is a nice breath of fresh air from what you'd usually find from most pop rap.

Keep resting easy.

J. Cole - The Off-Season
50

The Off-Season? More like the Mid-Season LOL.

With corny bars so corny that they could've been farmed from a field, partnered with distinctively average beats and some weird auto tune choices, The Off-Season is lives up to its title of being very off. Some songs showed potential, especially the ones featuring Bas, but others felt extremely generic and average. If Cole is trying to show that he is undeserving of all of the mixed reception he gets, he unfortunately failed in his pursuit.

Justice - †

A few months ago, I found a Waters Of Nazareth meme remix on YouTube, and before finding that I had heard several meme remixes using this weird electronic beat with a yellow cross picture mainly from Clone Hero clips from streamers like Acai. My curiosity finally got the better of me, so I listened to the song without the meme additions, and it blew me away. I then proceeded to hear the whole album, and it was amazing. It's an orchestra of electronic and disco genius that, controversially, has ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - Cherry Bomb
65

'OUCH, MY SWEET HORNY EARS!' the album.

With most experimental hip hop albums, the creators know how to work the abrasiveness of noise. Death Grips and clipping. have managed to morph their noisy and loud elements into extremely fitting instrumentals, for which they can then rap or scream over. But on Cherry Bomb, Tyler's voice is massively drowned out in absolute chaos... and I kind of love it. It feels totally crazy and nonsensical and I respect the experiment that's taken place, and mixed ... read more

Childish Gambino - Camp
70

Yeah Camp is corny and mediocre at heart, but it holds a special place for me because of just how damn happy it makes me. Every time I listen I always get a good chuckle at a different line, and I'm mesmerised by the solid production all throughout. Plus the story on That Power is always a great yet simple example of story telling through song format. Anyways, instead of going on about how I don't think this sucks, I think I should put some of my favourite lines from each song that always ... read more

"@NeedlefluuJr Hehe no worries. The beauty with art is that our opinions and views on things change over time, and when people invite you to look back and reassess something it's always a nice feeling regardless if it's something you do or don't enjoy. I'm very much an opinionated person but sometimes I can be a bit harsh, so thanks for highlighting my WAY TOO harsh score. No piece of art deserves a 0 unless it's actively offensive or devoid of any integrity, which is rarely ever the case, and this song certainly doesn't fit that category especially because Simz is a true from the heart story teller. I hope that going from 0 to 30 has increased the songs average rating by at least 0.1% 😎"

"Yeah Conor definitely put in an underperformance on this one. Going from his beautiful ballads on the self-tilted to his booming screeches on the Broken Machine bangers, to then landing on a laid back not-even-trying indie pop rock whimper is kind of jarring. Still a good album IMO but as a vocalist he's been pushed to the sidelines by inconsistent synth pop formulas and idk how to feel about it."
