Tyler, The Creator - Cherry Bomb
65

'OUCH, MY SWEET HORNY EARS!' the album.

With most experimental hip hop albums, the creators know how to work the abrasiveness of noise. Death Grips and clipping. have managed to morph their noisy and loud elements into extremely fitting instrumentals, for which they can then rap or scream over. But on Cherry Bomb, Tyler's voice is massively drowned out in absolute chaos... and I kind of love it. It feels totally crazy and nonsensical and I respect the experiment that's taken place, and mixed ... read more

Childish Gambino - Camp
70

Yeah Camp is corny and mediocre at heart, but it holds a special place for me because of just how damn happy it makes me. Every time I listen I always get a good chuckle at a different line, and I'm mesmerised by the solid production all throughout. Plus the story on That Power is always a great yet simple example of story telling through song format. Anyways, instead of going on about how I don't think this sucks, I think I should put some of my favourite lines from each song that always ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
75

Edit: 60 -> 75, DAMN I was wrong. Listening more closely to the lyrics on the ten non radio bait pop rap tracks, there's a certain mastery at work. If not for HUMBLE, LOVE, GOD and LOYALTY, this would literally be a perfect album. I get the album much better now after another more meaningful listen, but this is still the most bipolar album I've ever heard. I've been through thick and thin with this project, but I'm now in a place where I can appreciate the artistry at work. DAMN is great, it ... read more

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager
80

The sequel to the Man On The Moon series feels much darker than its predecessor, with more emphasis on the weed side of things, and also on tracks that have a solemn layer to them like These Worries and MANIAC. It's a little long but still has the impact and infectiousness of the first album, and feels much grander and larger than the first instalment.

There's some pretty impressive lengths that Cudi goes to on this one, from great orchestral pieces that could fit into Late Registration's ... read more

Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats - UNLOCKED
55

Weird. Just weird. UNLOCKED is a brief punch of vicious beats and bars, but it's weeeeird. It feels like both of the guys are throwing punches in their fields wildly and quickly, but they're both overshooting in terms of consistency and memorability throughout the listening, so much so that this feels like a throwaway album even though it's obviously not the case. I totally get what they're going for though, and they succeed for the most part. I just don't feel like I'm ever going to naturally ... read more

Jean Grae & Quelle Chris - Everything's Fine
80

I don't know man, maybe everything's not fine.

An album from an underground hip hop pairing of husband and wife sounds kind of corny as first glance. I mean if you searched up marriage and hip hop you'd probably find The Big Day and Chance's inescapable love of his wife. But Everything's Fine is in mint condition. It covers a wide variety of topics such as jumping on social bandwagons, identity and ultimately accepting your life condition when everything is certainly not fine.

The beats and ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - GINGER
80

GINGER feels immensely more emotional and intimate than pretty much all of the group's other albums, with a collection of tracks that feel a lot more heavy than those found in the SATURATION trilogy. In the short span of two years, the group has gone through a fair amount, and it shows on this album.

Instead of following the SATURATION formula of bangers at the start and ballads at the end, it opens with the stunning NO HALO, followed by the infectious yet down trodden SUGAR. There's a lot ... read more

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
60

The Low End Theory is one of the most prolific hip hop albums to emerge from the 1990s. And to this day, many people still consider it as an incredible work of artistry. But in my opinion, although it is still a very solid album, it lacks much diversity and intrigue when revisiting it.

The drum beats on every single song feel extremely similar, to the point where it starts to suck the creativity from the record, and the other minor additions to the beats don't feel particularly astounding ... read more

Nothing But Thieves - Moral Panic
85

Moral Panic is an anxious and distressed album that depicts the end of humanity as we know it. It details the last moments of a man on Earth, and how love is still the quintessential thing that he desires before he fades away. Nothing But Thieves incorporates some minor electronic and experimental additions to their usual rock sound to create a warped and crazed atmosphere. There's not as many bangers on here as on Broken Machine, but it feels a lot more compact and precise as an album when ... read more

Kero Kero Bonito - Bonito Generation
85

This is a piece of propaganda from Kero Kero 'Anti Establishment' Bonito that describes Sarah Bonito's despising of education and society, and details how she wants to raise a generation of anarchists who disregard society entirely. The fact that people consider this album cute and bubbly is the most telling part of this piece of brainwashing. They're covering a despicable message with pleasant music in order to slowly manipulate the minds of whoever listens to them. So here's my telling of the ... read more

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
90

I don't often merge together my separate passions of film and music, but in this instance it feels necessary. I recently saw the Amy documentary film, and I listened to this album once before watching, and then several more times since watching it. All I can say is that this album creates a fascinating foundation for the story of Amy. Certain songs clearly depict troubled times of her life, and how she was feeling at certain moments. I don't often pay much attention to the background music in ... read more

Noname - Telefone
75

Telefone is lo-fi hip hop taken to a soft jazzy extent. It's a mixtape filled with gentle instrumentals, blissful choruses and odd fitting bars from Noname, and it all culminates into a really nice collection of songs. For me, there were a few boring moments because at times it can feel a little too relaxed and 'Lo-fi beats to study to' levels of minimalism to the point of some segments feeling like nothingness, but when this album hits it really hits. There's not a whole lot to say about ... read more

Royal Blood - Typhoons
80

I came into this album hoping for some screeching guitars and catchy and potent choruses, and I came out with screeching guitars, catchy and potent choruses, AND a mixture of electronic stuff thrown in for good measure. Typhoons is a good mixture of the hard rock that Royal Blood is known for mixed with sounds that I can only relate to the French electronic duo Justice. I knew before listening that this wouldn't be a huge change up in the sound of the lads, but it still caught me off guard with ... read more

Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day
80

I was pretty damn late to listening to Cudi, as in I only started the Man On The Moon trilogy in around February. I seriously regret not checking out his stuff when I was younger, because younger me would probably love this album more than older me. The first MOTM is great, and easily has the best and simplest to follow concept of any Cudi album.

It's clear that this album has come from the 2000s, but despite this there are some tracks that remain timeless. For instance, the smash hit Day 'N' ... read more

Death Grips - The Powers That B
95

The Powers That B is a sensational double album from hip hops most abrasive and inventive triad. It consists of Gentlemen on the Moon and Jenny Death, and both albums are similar in terms of aesthetics but different in terms of their messages.

Gentlemen on the Moon (Album 1): Gentlemen on the Moon is all about weird Bjork bangers and contains the typical nonsensical and insane Ride bars that we're typically used to. It's crazed and absolutely crazy, but still retains a musical quality to it ... read more

BeyoncΓ© - Lemonade
80

After a harsh realisation of infidelity, Beyoncé decided to do what all women would do in a situation like this: make a 40 minute Grammy nominated visual album that's essentially an elongated diss track towards your husband. Lemonade is feisty and unrelenting, with some softer moments that helps to build a story of love, hate and absolutely destroying shit.

Some of the vigorous bangers include the incredibly hard hitting Freedom, the anthemically black and lyrically powerful Formation, ... read more

Rural Internet - breaking up.
80

You know, going into this year I really felt like the one thing I needed to hear was an Australian man screaming at me with experimental trap beats blasting out behind him.

breaking up. goes very very hard for literally no reason, and is a weird little album that sits oddly in the sparse land of 2021 hip hop. A quarter of a year has gone past and no big rap players have come out yet, meaning that the slightly smaller artists such as Genesis Owusu, as well as some kind of large artists like ... read more

My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
90

I am no rock man, and I am no emo man, but man oh man I am a My Chemical Romance kind of man. When I started listening to The Black Parade a few weeks ago, I expected some bangers and... maybe just bangers. But upon listening to it several times, I now understand that it does indeed have bangers, AND a pretty cool concept too. And as much as I want to deny that I enjoy listening to emo ballads, I seriously cannot find any faults with this album. It annoys me so much, but at the same time I love ... read more

Thundercat - It Is What It Is
70

It Is What It Is is the musical equivalent of :)

It's simple, funky and greatly enjoyable until the very end, with a nice smooth sound all throughout accompanied by a nice serving of bops, such as Black Qualls and Funny Thing. Dragonball Durag may be the greatest song of all time and I'm perfectly okay with that. Some parts of the album are forgettable because the sound is very similar all throughout, but the quality stays consistently good which will keep you hooked on the album until the ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Origins
20

100th Review! I just wanted to say another thank you for if you read my reviews. I know they're not exactly the best and that I don't interact too much on this website, but I'm still actively enjoying the community and everything that this site comes out with.

Today I thought I'd lament over yet another bad album for my newest milestone, with that being Imagine Dragons' Origins. I think some context needs to be added for these guys. Like many kids, I was infatuated with Imagine Dragons when I ... read more

"@NeedlefluuJr Hehe no worries. The beauty with art is that our opinions and views on things change over time, and when people invite you to look back and reassess something it's always a nice feeling regardless if it's something you do or don't enjoy. I'm very much an opinionated person but sometimes I can be a bit harsh, so thanks for highlighting my WAY TOO harsh score. No piece of art deserves a 0 unless it's actively offensive or devoid of any integrity, which is rarely ever the case, and this song certainly doesn't fit that category especially because Simz is a true from the heart story teller. I hope that going from 0 to 30 has increased the songs average rating by at least 0.1% 😎"

"Yeah Conor definitely put in an underperformance on this one. Going from his beautiful ballads on the self-tilted to his booming screeches on the Broken Machine bangers, to then landing on a laid back not-even-trying indie pop rock whimper is kind of jarring. Still a good album IMO but as a vocalist he's been pushed to the sidelines by inconsistent synth pop formulas and idk how to feel about it."
