Black Country, New Road - For the first time

CARS ARE GOING BEEP BEEP BEEP

I decided to listen to everyone's 2021 gem today. It's an understatement to say that the expectations were high, because I've been seeing statements being made for this LP such as 'a masterpiece' and things like 'a milestone for the future of rock'. Now I will admit, I'm not really a rock sort of guy, but I still do enjoy the occasional rock album and some of the miscellaneous rock content that I come across. I was expecting this to have a schlagenheim effect on ... read more

Noga Erez - KIDS
45

Kids is okay. It's like if Billie Eilish had Gorillaz production, but if Billie rapped and the Gorillaz followed some generic pop trends in terms of production style. There are some good songs on this album, but the thing that's holding it back is some weaker vocal performances, predominantly in the form of weak choruses and hooks, and some bland instrumentals at points.

She has a distinctive voice which is always good, as well as some hard hitting vocals on occasion, but her voice can also ... read more

serpentwithfeet - DEACON
60

DEACON is fine. It's a little boring at points, but at other times it truly shines in a dazzling fashion. There's not a lot of switch ups or interesting diversities in the overall sound, apart from the last song (which is probably one of my favourite songs of the year so far), Fellowship.

There's a pleasant vibe throughout DEACON, with a passionate and soft view of a relationship, but as said before it does get boring and stale at many points. It's the strongest songs that carries this album, ... read more

Abstract hip hop is getting very repetitive with Mr Woods. Like it's not bad or anything, it's just very repetitive. It's solid rapping with no hooks over looping quirky beats. Haram epitomises this, and last year's Brass also shows this, but I feel like Brass is the better of the two. The lyricism is always solid but there's no memorability to it. There's no substance at hand and I think the lack of solid hooks mainly summarises this. Perhaps it's just Billy Woods, but I've only heard Haram ... read more

black midi - Schlagenheim
95

Schlagenheim is adrenaline pumping and absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way. It combines strange male Kate Bush like vocals talking about nonsense with guitars screeching at max volume with drums exploding off in the distance. This is rock taken to its limits, to its noisy and unhinged ends, and it's absolutely incredible.

The experience can't be summed up in many words, it's one that needs to be witnessed first hand. It's a dark delve into a crazed and manic world filled with an ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
80

damn.

If you blink then you'll miss it. You'll miss the expertly crafted yet brief beats, and the top notch Sweatshirt lyricism that fluctuates in volume, as if to represent how you're taking a dive into a clustered and scattered mind, and only the most potent and dangerous thoughts are breaking through the messy beats to reach your understanding. It's sensational. I just wish it was longer, but due to its shortness it adds to this brief narrative that feels like a quick delve into the life of ... read more

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 3
65

Run The Jewels 3 is the third instalment of the epic collaboration between El-P and Killer Mike, and to be honest, it's easily the worst. It has a bloated track list that's about 3 songs larger than usual, and some of these tracks are near to impossible to separate from one another. But in consequence of this trade off, we still do get some of the duo's finest songs to date.

Before anything else, I just want to say that I think the first four tracks are sensationally hard hitting. RTJ3 has a ... read more

Madvillain - Madvillainy
95

Somehow I forgot to review one of the most important albums of all time. Huh. Well first things first, rest in peace to THE VILLAIN. The man has left behind an incredible legacy, and although his persona is shrouded in mystery, one things in plain and obvious sight: MF DOOM has an unbelievable amount of talent and has generated a never-ending influence over such a gigantic industry. And so, on to the review.

Madvillainy is weird. Like has anyone ever stopped to question this album's existence? ... read more

JAY-Z - Reasonable Doubt
85

It's funny to think of how gangsta rap has evolved over the years. From heavy drug, gun and sex bars layered on top of stylish and classy beats to repeating a few words relating to the same topics previously mentioned, but in much less detail and over generic trap beats. Nevertheless, Jay was one of the big 90s rappers who delved into the gangsta bar route, and my god does it pay off. He produces probably his finest album to date, and makes an incredible time capsule for 90s rap.

Even on his ... read more

NxWorries - Yes Lawd!
55

This is a Madvillainy impression but with neo soul instead of hip hop, and it's okay. I love Andy, but this is not really the peak of his talent. The songs are fairly forgettable and lack the love and life that he usually brings into his music. This feels like a bundle of b side hip hop beats given to Andy to be salvaged for a throwaway album.

It's not to say that it's entirely bad, however. It has very nice sounding moments, and some songs that are actually bearable and enjoyable, such as the ... read more

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
85

Imagine setting genre boundaries lol.

In a desolate covid stricken world, there's not a lot of happiness going around. But when an infectiously funky disco pop album comes out, maybe it makes the world just a little better. Is it an excessively horny disco album? Yes. Is it going to die in popularity very soon? Most likely. Do I care? No, because Future Nostalgia gives me an indescribable sense of happiness and I literally don't care if I get judged for liking this.

So every song is pretty ... read more

clipping. - CLPPNG
90

He raps over a god damn alarm clock. 10/10

For real though, CLPPNG is sparse, random and sure as hell noisy, but geez this thing is hard hitting. Their two later horrorcore albums arguably have better songs, but the album's aren't as concise and impressive as CLPPNG is. It doesn't give off an enjoyable or fun vibe like their more recent albums do, but instead it's replaced with this ominous and mysterious sound that always keeps you on edge. The horrorcore isn't present, and in its place is ... read more

clipping. - There Existed an Addiction to Blood
90

Compared to its sequel counterpart, Addiction To Blood has the better singular tracks, but Visions Of Bodies has a much more realised concept and feels much more consistent overall. So in short, I'm giving VOBBB a 90 because of the album's appeal, and I'm giving TEAATB a 90 too because of the individual song appeal. I found that comparing the album's tracks next to each other gave me a good indication as to how the best of Blood could easily beat most of Bodies, but the worst stuff really paled ... read more

The Life Of Pablo is possibly one of the messiest albums of all time for several reasons, but Kanye damn well knows how to get his music all together in the end. With hidden features that have the potential to blow away literally any listener and lyricism from Kanye that goes a bit deeper than what we're used to, we are left with an insane album from one of music's most polarising yet enchanting icons.

The bodacious nature of Kanye is at an all time high with songs like Famous and Real ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE
80

The boys return with yet another album, and it's pretty good. It's no secret that alot of BROCKHAMPTON's stuff sounds very similar, and this album is no different, meaning that if you're not a BH fan then this record won't catch you by surprise. But nonetheless, it takes a slightly softer tone than usual especially towards the latter end of the sit through.

You start off with your typical hip hop bangers with BUZZCUT and CHAIN ON, and then you finish with some emotional ballads with the ... read more

Lorde - Melodrama
80

Lorde's seemingly final album mashes together her rawer and darker lyricism with a brand new, stylish and audacious production style that jumps from one extreme to the next. But one thing's for certain, it all culminates in a near perfect pop album that Lorde probably believes is good enough for her not to release another.

Normally when smaller artists get more money to make another album, they distort their sound to the point where they're unrecognisable, or to a point where all of their ... read more

Kanye West - ye
85

After an onslaught of (more) controversies and odd situations, Kanye decides to drop an album. And this album is somehow his deepest and most personal to date. Although a lot of the lyrics can be misconstrued into weird contexts, it's clear that Kanye doesn't have any bad intents on this album. This is a man making music from his extremely cluttered head, and it's very enjoyable and interesting to listen to.

Kanye legitimately makes some masterpieces for this album. Ghost Town and Violent ... read more

D'Angelo - Brown Sugar
85

Sexy, smooth and delectable, the masterful Brown Sugar is one of the starting points for Neo-Soul, and it remains as one of the greatest albums linked to the genre since its conception. D'angelo is just so damn erotic with his uniquely erotic voice wrapped up in a soulful and blissful blanket of musical blessings. Brown Sugar is a gift to all ears that hear it.

There's not a lot that needs to be explained about Brown Sugar, it's one of those 'hear it to understand it' cases where its ... read more

Daft Punk - Discovery
85

Discovery is a wacky yet groovy and smooth electronic hit from the legendary French duo. It's been solidified as one of the greatest electronic albums of all time and it's easy to see why, but age hasn't been kind to a slight minority of the track list.

The duds occur during the middle portion of the album, but that doesn't take away from the excellence of Daft Punk's genius in their best songs. One More Time is an incredible opener, and songs like Digital Love, Harder Better Faster Stronger ... read more

Quadeca - From Me to You
80

I'd never heard of Quadeca until Sisyphus randomly appeared to me as a YouTube recommendation around a week ago. I never got around to listening to it until I saw that this album released, and so my curiosity got the better of me. It blew me away, and consequently I listened to the entireness of From Me To You. And all I can say was that it really touched me, especially with how shitty this year has been for me. Although there were obvious cringey moments and shortcomings that should've ... read more

"@NeedlefluuJr Hehe no worries. The beauty with art is that our opinions and views on things change over time, and when people invite you to look back and reassess something it's always a nice feeling regardless if it's something you do or don't enjoy. I'm very much an opinionated person but sometimes I can be a bit harsh, so thanks for highlighting my WAY TOO harsh score. No piece of art deserves a 0 unless it's actively offensive or devoid of any integrity, which is rarely ever the case, and this song certainly doesn't fit that category especially because Simz is a true from the heart story teller. I hope that going from 0 to 30 has increased the songs average rating by at least 0.1% 😎"

"Yeah Conor definitely put in an underperformance on this one. Going from his beautiful ballads on the self-tilted to his booming screeches on the Broken Machine bangers, to then landing on a laid back not-even-trying indie pop rock whimper is kind of jarring. Still a good album IMO but as a vocalist he's been pushed to the sidelines by inconsistent synth pop formulas and idk how to feel about it."
