I think that Sputnik review encapsulates a lot of people's reaction to this record. Yes, this isn't Deathcon. But by even mentioning that album, I am doing a significant disservice to the this record. And what is this record. It is great, for what it is. It really has its moments. Defenstration song is easily one of HANL's bests, but when compared to the likes of their masterful Deathconciousness, Dan's side project of Giles Corey (an album I consider the spiritual follow up to their debut) and even the new singles, it really just doesn't stand up. However, I do believe it is a credit to the duo's songwriting that one of their weaker moments still stands pretty strongly.

For me, their revival this decade has been pretty solid, but never really pushing the band's sound as much as they did on Soundtracks for the Blind. And unfortunately, that trend continues with Leaving Meaning. A solid album not doubt- unsettling and hypnotic (just what we want from Swans), it just feels like ... read more
