Julia Jacklin's second album has a very good way of describing itself. Though, in Australia, there has been no shortage of indie singer-songwriters in the past few years (one only has to see the success of Amy Shark and Ruby Fields), but not since Courtney Barnett has it ever sounded this good. Julia's voice is an obvious highlight, cutting through the instrumentation with extreme clarity, documenting an incredibly difficult time in her life. Despite it not being the most ground-breaking album, ... read more

Plain and shameless fun. Czarface bring another collaboration, this time with Ghostface Killah. The 90s boom-bap production may be nothing new, but the nostalgia hit it brings is palpable and is done in an incredibly tastefully. Comic book and movie references explode from the lyrics, giving it a fun edge. The chemistry between the two artists is also much better than that between Czarface and MF Doom (despite my love for the later), with the lyrical exchanges bringing fire and humour in equal ... read more

this is horrible. It really hurt.

Incredibly dull indie-pop trying its hardest to emulate Mac Demarco and Rex Orange County. The songs all seem to follow the same formulaic sound which can be charming but most of the time is sleep inducing. Sagar's voice is charming enough, but the droll instrumentation that accompanies it really does drag this down.

Imagine un-ironically liking this album. A combination of fake-woke lyrics and uninspired song structures leads to a deeply unimpressive debut. It's a shit Jamie-T rip off.

Best Track: I Love You, Will You Marry Me

By the time the album crosses beyond Post-Blue, it really loses its magic sheen. The album makes a flying start, brining a series of engaging, infectious and memorable psych-pop numbers. It is far more solid that Everything is Forgotten as well (an album carried by the track Ubu), but it still lacks consistency, evident in the lacklustre second half.

A dark, apocalyptic and gorgeous album. Ladytron further delve into their retro electronica sounds to build so far this years most haunting record. The 80s vibe in undeniable, but feels refreshing. The soundscapes of this album also feel incredibly detailed and the production is top notch. One major criticism
of this album I do have however is that is does lack a sense of ambition. Though that point is ultimately detrimental to the overall listen, it is still incredibly worthwhile.

Kitchen sink experimentalism that does have a place. I can see the enjoyment some would get out of this album, however for me it just felt like it was trying far too hard to be edgy and different. It is very unsettling music, granted, but that all it seems to be.

It is perfect radio filler pop music with a deeply vulnerable twist. I have never really admired Ariana as an individual, but nobody can deny she really has been through the works lately. Instead of going full Britney on us, she channels it into this easy listening, friendly album that is indeed very safe, but never feels generic. Though her voice is definitely her strongest asset, she rarely 'shows off', taking subtle approach, and even if not every song she does this on works (7 rings we are ... read more

A brilliantly over top and purposefully album that is simple mindless fun. Its 80s vibe may be an overdone style these days, but this groups modern twist and control help to elevate it slightly. It does lack some originality, but that is clearly not what it was aiming for. However, being the kind of album it is, a few tracks are even a little too mindless, feeling quite forgettable. It's a straightforward album that is well crafted and a really simple music anyone could enjoy.

Another pointless album from the left overs of a once shining period of British music.

A mostly good, introverted album. The production is clean and Boogie's flow if fairly standard has elements of skill and finesse about it. Lyrically this kind of feels like it is trying to be good kid mAAd city, but it manages to construct some personal and compelling narratives of what it is like to live in Compton. My major gripe about this album is how the now violently irrelevant Eminem still manages to make a guest verse about himself and dissing critics.

Like waves on a beach, Buoys feels relaxing, gentle and refreshing. But just like those same waves, they come and go fairly consequence free and leaving little impression, with each individual movement of water being almost identical to the last.

About as inoffensive as music could possibly get. Lyrical unsensational and instrumentally unambitious, this album is radio fodder through and through. it takes exactly zero risks and by the end of its 1 hour run time, you will probably forget everything you heard.

Best Track: Walk Alone

A very horrible album for an equally horrible film.

An album that shouldn't work in any sort of way, but boy it does. This is the kind of album Fallout Boy think their unlistenable MANIA is, a ballsy fusion of hard rock and EDM that works. To reference Metal Injection, this album will cause (in fact already has) outrage from many listeners which is often the cause of a break away from sound, but the proof is in the pudding.
