Scott 2 takes all the elements that made Scott Walker's debut album appealing and adds a little bit more flair and prowess to its instrumentation and writing. It's a lot more eccentric and less focused on just being a grand Baroque Pop album, leaving the listener with just a little more to chew on than on the first album, and here you can also, for the first time, see a little bit of the dark and manic nature of his performances, in tracks like "Next". Yet, there's still also a lot of ... read more
As a person living in Germany, I gotta tell you how awful our Hip Hop culture is. It's like taking the worst rappers of mainstream Rap in the US and making them even worse, basically, because our mainstream just copies from bad artists. Now, to make Keemo mad (I guess), he's the only rapper from Germany that I could really compare to an artist of the prowess and stature of Kendrick Lamar, as nobody really compares to OG Keemo's storytelling, writing, and production. This is an interesting ... read more
Honestly can't tell you why this album just gets me, but it's probably my favorite of the year so far. I'm usually not a big Punk-guy, I like some bands but it's certainly not my most listened-to genre, but the zany absurdity of Super Snõõper hits all the right spots for my sensibilities in this type of music. It's short, it really feels like a breeze when you listen to it, and it's certainly not the deepest or most lyrically dense project you're gonna come across this year, but ... read more
Definitely one of the best live albums I've ever heard. I was vaguely familiar with Sam Cooke, but I don't remember hearing much from him besides What A Wonderful World, so I went into this blindly, knowing only a little bit of his historical importance and that many consider him to be one of the best vocalists of all time, and I was pretty much blown away by this. You rarely hear a performer as energetic as Cooke sounds here, and the amount of heart and soul in these vocals is so incredibly ... read more
I originally skipped this album when I was on my big Miles Davis binge last year, and I honestly don't entirely remember for what reason, as this is considered an essential part of his discography, but I honestly don't entirely get why it is so revered. This is a great compilation record, and obviously a defining record of Davis' style and career, but if you've heard what this man was capable of, then this album comes off as a relatively underwhelming collection of tracks. It's nothing that ... read more
It took me literal years to get accustomed to the Dead Kennedys' sound, but after many, many more listens over time, it finally clicked with me the way I always wanted it to click. I always thought their satirical approach to Punk music was really funny, clever, relevant and intelligent, and I also believed that their instrumentation was top-notch for the Hardcore Punk genre, with incredible performances on pretty much every instrument, especially the riffs have stuck with me the way few other ... read more
Richard D. James never disappoints with his work, and this new EP of his is a welcome surprise to me. It's not even close to his best work, I even think the Collapse EP he dropped a couple of years ago was a little better than this, but I cannot say I feel underwhelmed at all by it. "Blackbox Life Recorder 21f" (the track) is classic Aphex Twin, I haven't heard him sounding this soothingly smooth since the 90s, and "in a room7 f760" is pleasingly perplexing and complex, ... read more
Despite Scott Walker being one of the most enigmatic figures in modern music history, his early work doesn't offer a ton of things to point out or say; yet, it is fundamentally still incredible to witness. Not a lot of he material on this album is originally written by Walker, but my god does he turn them into his songs. It's rare to hear so much sincerity and instrumental care put into cover songs or at least songs that were merely written for you, but "Scott" is very emotional, ... read more
I mean wtf like how like shit like jesus fucking christ like chill like idk what the fuck wow
A L E X going jazzy; interesting direction to take. Neither under this pseudonym nor the Alicks name has he released something this outwardly jazz-influenced, and for the most part, it works well! It doesn't really capture the melancholia of the rest of his discography (under any name, really), but it is a welcome surprise and still very interesting to listen to. It sticks out like a sore thumb, but at the same time, I can't say I mind this sore thumb.
I'm always impressed when I hear a Miles Davis album, but it's even more stunning to me how great even his earliest projects were. Miles Davis Volume 2 is short and sweet, but immediately captures his spirit, genius, craft and artistry in a compact and relatively digestible form. It's far from a standout in his discography, but I do not regret listening to it whatsoever.
Happy 82nd Birthday to the greatest songwriter of all time! John Wesley Harding is certainly an oddity in Dylan's discography up to that point in time. Probably his biggest stylistic change since he went electric, not only sonically, but also in terms of writing. Throughout his career, Dylan was known as an abstract poet, a protest song writer, a lovably absurdist storyteller. In this album, however, he went into a direction that mostly focuses on telling self-contained, intricate little short ... read more
A kind of dark collaboration between two pioneers. I adored a lot of what was on this project, but at the same time, nothing left really much of a mark on me. It feels gripping but nevertheless rarely made me feel as though what I was listening to offered more than what I get out of these two's separate solo efforts. Though, at the same time, I'm glad that it happened and I get to listen to it.
An amazing project from the late great Bill Withers! While it may be a bit varying in terms of excitement and quality, the songs on here are all very beautiful, sincere, powerful and potent. Nothing on this album really disappoints, even the worst tracks are incredibly well performed, but there are some standouts that definitely effect me more than others. I really loved this album, it was about as good as I hoped it would be, and there's always something wonderful about hearing this man's ... read more
Very interesting and weird album for The Beach Boys. I adore Pet Sounds, at some point I'll probably give that album the 100/100 rating that it most likely deserves, but for this album, I was a bit baffled yet intrigued. It's sort of melancholic, cold and dreamy, it funnily enough feels like a bunch of surfer dudes being sad because of bad weather, but in actuality, there are some really fantastic tunes on here. Of course, as it is with many BB projects, there are the stinkers in here, we all ... read more
Feeling a bit blown away by this one. I never listened to Keith Jarrett before this live album, didn't know much about him, but this is absolutely magnificent. It's as soothing as it is fiery, as dreamy as it is concentrated, as lush as it is complex, I cannot really fathom how he did this, especially since this was entirely improvised. It truly feels like an odyssey, a journey through which Jarrett guides his listeners, to have been in that room in Cologne must've been an unforgettable ... read more
The Social Network score has some of Reznor and Ross' best compositions, Hand Covers Bruise is one of the greatest things that they've ever created and there are a lot of other pieces on here that I really love, but I wouldn't say that goes for every single track. Some of it just doesn't work much without the film but that being said, I still really love this project.
While it's been some time since I played Undertale, Toby Fox truly made the great soundtrack of our time with this one. Really, which other game OST even comes close to being as memorable, iconic, recognizable and effective as this one in our modern gaming world? It's one of the very few in recent memory that actually rival the classic OSTs like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Earthbound, the first few Pokémon games, Metroid, etc., etc. They are cute, fun, funky, and also, at parts, very ... read more
