For the uninitiated, Owen Kufta is a member of avant garde outlet Ploon and is a frequent collaborator with one of my favorite bands, Blasphemous Basement. While the work of Poon hasn't captured my interest or attention in the same way Blasphemous Basement's has, nor have I explored it nearly as extensively, I figured I'd see what one of the members is up to in his free time.
Despite the avant garde nature of Blasphemous Basement and Ploon, Owen Kufta plays this record very straight. Outside ... read more
BLEPMPEMOOS BAZMINT??? GOES TO HECK?????? ALL SIXTY ROCKSTARS IN LE HECK????????????? OATMEAL SIXTY NINE ROCKSTAR?????? WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
In what feels like Beefheart reincarnate, Pulgas makes a rock in opposition record with modern sensibilities. This record pulls from places no RIO record should, which somehow makes it feel like a true successor to a genre that has been dormant for far too long. With incredible musicianship, excellent humor, and hooks to stick the landing, The Book of Pulgas is one of the best avant-garde releases I've heard in awhile.
Before I listened to this record, it was described to me as "Kanye West's white album." And I find that to be an accurate descriptor for this album. With insane stylistic and thematic jumps, this record is all over the place and is perhaps the most chaotic Kanye album to date.
The strongest element of this record is its production. The diversity of sound serves it greatly, opening with a track I'd describe as neo-gospel, but then quickly shifting to tracks with trap tropes and even ... read more
this album made Lil Yachty's 2023 masterpiece Let's Start Here possible. Viper is a visionary.
Blasphemous Basement dabbling with more traditional song structure is always an odd sight to see. For such a jam oriented band, their more standard songwriting provides a unique angle of perspective into their creative process, with a more premeditated and much further fleshed out song giving far more clarity than unstructured 15 minute jams. I would also describe this record as a creative risk. The band clearly put much more effort and attention into this release, with it being in production ... read more
Off The Crust is yet another fantastic release this year from everyone's favorite needlessly prolific avant garde band. This record I'm inclined to call the lite version of Evidence Of Unintelligent Life Forms From Other Planets. It has similar ambient spoken passages, some goofy moments, and some great grooves. This one does go in a heavier direction, with blast beats at its heights of energy. It's also a bit more hifi. My primary complaint with this is the same as it has been with most of ... read more
This is definitely a far more memorable record than the last NN album, with fantastic energy and beats from start to finish. The record has a simple but lovable aesthetic, with fun synth patches and drum grooves. My primary criticism for this record is some of the melodic ideas can get very muddy, due to odd compositional choices, placement of competing synths, or just overall odd mixing. But in the sparser sections of the record, the chosen textures are very effective and are a joy to just ... read more
This record got so much better on second listen. After allowing the material to take a backseat in my mind for awhile, I returned to Putrid Pasta with a far greater appreciation for the insanely harsh textures of this record. Riding the line of harsh noise and noise rock so well, this record has so much variety but doesn't overstay its welcome, sitting at a tight 25 minutes. Definitely an important release from the bois in the basement, check this one out if you haven't. I rate it as good as ... read more
Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce that Blasphemous Basement is BACK!
Another record within the series of fully improvised records, Crunky is probably the most consistent of these, and also has some of the most clean audio of any Basement record based around live instrumentation. Featuring 5 new Untitled Basement Jams, these are a great return to form, with chaotic instrumentals, goofy skits, and random banter that just adds to the charm.
UBJ12 is the standout track of the record. ... read more
Singlehandedly brought Christian hip-hop back into the mainstream
Pedestrian Deposit is a band I'm not super familiar with. This is the only full project from them I've heard but it impacted me so much, enough that I felt a need to write a review of it with a very high score. What compelled me to do so?
First of all, my friend asked me to write a review of this because I forced him to listen to it. I figure fair's fair, if I made a chronic electro-house listener take 45 minutes of their day to listen to a harsh noise/ambient project, the least I can do is ... read more
When I set out on my journey to finish the Blasphemous Basement discography, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I did not know the scope of the band's skill set nor the bounds of their creative vision. But after finishing 18 albums, my preconceived notions about a band who releases an album nearly every two weeks had been shattered. Their work made me laugh, it made me darn near cry, and it made me groove so hard. The true passion can be felt in every work they release.

I was gonna wait until I finished their whole discography before I put a rating on any of their records, but I had to make an exception for this one. Going into the Blasphemous Basement catalog, I was definitely dreading this record due to its length. Any time I see an album with a length over 70 minutes, I tend to be skittish about checking it out, and this record sits well over 3 hours. But here I am, 3 hours later, with my mind blown and my face torn off. In a time where it feels everything ... read more
