Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
58
I recognize the musicianship and there are some songs I really like here, but this just isn’t my type of music. More often than not, Rain Dogs is awkward, but not in a fun way, just an uncomfortable way. Plus, Tom’s voice loses its charm pretty quickly.
Yes - Close to the Edge

Big, grand, interstellar prog rock like nothing I’ve ever heard before.

Close to the Edge is like an introduction to a new planet in the form of song. The centerpiece of the album is the 18-minute title track, a rock symphony with synths, organs, guitars, and vocals melding into beautiful walls of sound. The synth drones in particular on this track make me feel like I’m floating in the cosmos.

Luther Vandross - Never Too Much

The smooth soul is elevated by Luther’s clear, beautiful voice, and although it stays very much in its lane, every song is vibe-worthy.

On top of the fascinating subject matter, the songs slap, with memorable moments by the boatload. Whether it’s the angry rantings of “Creepy Crawlers,” the fast-paced chorus of “Troglodyte,” ... read more

Elliott Smith - XO
100
There is a zone of perfection in which happy and sad intertwine in just the right amounts, and Elliott Smith definitely reached that zone with this album.

Don’t let the album cover fool you—XO is Elliott Smith’s most vibrant and colorfully brilliant album, taking advantage of his newfound funding (as this was his first major-label album). Add some poppy Beatles-esque style, a buffet of new instruments, and a plethora of backing vocals, and what you get is a chock-full 44 ... read more
