The Flaming Lips - King's Mouth
Aug 14, 2019
75
The art rock band releases their 15th album. It’s a concept album that serves as a soundtrack for the book and artwork with the same name. It’s written/created by lead vocalist, Wayne Coyne. The record tells a story about the rise and fall of a giant king and his preserved head. Besides Coyne’s lead vocals, Mick Jones (The Clash) narrates parts of the story. The songs are colourful and playful, with quirky instrumentation and creative sound effects. There are moments where the vocal and lyrical delivery can feel corny. Partly, because it’s a children’s story, but it’s also just the way the band writes their songs. The album is a return to form for The Flaming Lips. Where 2017’s “Oczy Mlody” was a bit of a snoozer, “King’s Mouth” manages to tell a compelling story in a fun way.
Best track: “All For The Life Of The City”
