The Academy Is... - Almost There
65

It's here and it's fine! Any value that I'm getting out of this album is because I was already a fan, not sure it's gonna have anything for new listeners. It's not so much that TAI is escaping the trappings of nostalgia that haunt the modern Warped Tour alum, but that they're falling into them in a new way---instead of playing to the millennial crowd sonically, they're playing to them lyrically.

The Anniversary - Designing a Nervous Breakdown

Quite fun and catchy, but also very repetitive at times. I had to check that I hadn't accidentally replayed "The D in Detroit" when I heard the intro for "Emma Discovery" because the two sound pretty similar. "All Things Ordinary" is a definite stand out that I find myself coming back to frequently.

Patrick Stump - Soul Punk

i’m high right now and have really questionable ideas for music to listen to when i’m high literally what the fuck is this i cannot begin to articulate the amount of crazy choices made here

Babehoven - Water's Here in You

a beautiful, dreamy folk album. looking forward to blissfully swaying to some of these songs when i see them live soon.

Stevie Nicks - The Other Side of the Mirror

honestly, a disappointing album from stevie. i love rooms on fire but unfortunately that’s the best song on this album. it’s so static, the songs all blur together and the sound has not aged well.

Dazey and the Scouts - Maggot

The instrumentation and energy on this record are fantastic, I think that the sound has aged beautifully. Unfortunately, despite it being not even a decade old I think a lot of the lyrics here are so stuck in the era that they were written. Tracks like Wet and James Deen You Let Us Down have the subtlety of a Tramp Stamps song, and I really hate to say that because I know that this band is far more genuine. When thinking of the lyrics as a product of their time, I'm reminded of acts like ... read more

The Academy Is... - Fast Times at Barrington High

In theory, I hate the idea of adults writing about high school. It just seems disingenuous to me. In practice, though, this album is so much fun. It's catchy pop punk goodness that feels like a summer vacation of an album.

Cobra Starship - While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets

Unfortunately, I do have a soft spot for Cobra Starship's brand of over the top, trashy electro-dance-pop. It's the type of music where I can turn my brain off and just have fun, because the energy is so infectious. The problem with this album is that it doesn't push itself far enough into that zone. The opening track is bizarre, and comes off as far too sincere on an album that's supposed to be borderline satirical party music. The rest of the album is hit or miss for me. There are some fun ... read more

Fall Out Boy - Save Rock and Roll
58

Save Rock and Roll is horrible title, both in the general sense and in the way that it gives this album a concrete mission statement. It's a title that sets the album up for failure - the album ends and rock and roll is definitively not saved, especially with the hindsight of the past ten years. This doesn't mean it's a bad listen, but with a title so grandiose and even egotistical, of course the music is going to fall flat in comparison.
I came into this album with a soft spot for the first ... read more

Good Charlotte - The Chronicles of Life and Death
40

I picked this up at a thrift store, half as a joke because my only knowledge of this band before listening to this album was from the infamous fanfic My Immortal. I popped it in the cd player on my way home, and after slogging through the terribly pretentious intro was greeted with some pretty standard pop punk. In it's best moments, it's truly just *fine*; however, it's worst brings laughably terrible lyrics and some truly painful singing. I just can't see myself ever reaching for this over ... read more

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
70

In it's best moments, The Suburbs evokes the changing of the seasons, from the exuberance of spring buds to the melancholy of falling leaves. Songs such as the title track and Sprawl II burst with life and energy, while my personal favorite track Suburban War illustrates the pain of growing apart in a gut wrenching and beautiful way. At worst, however, the album resembles the suburban landscape a little too well, with tracks that blur together in my mind and go on just a bit too long. It's a ... read more

No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom

No Doubt at it's finest. The songs are energetic and catchy, and putting on this album never fails to get me in a good mood.

The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2

like dark clouds rolling in during a humid late summer afternoon. a thunderstorm of catharsis.
