The most "dance punky" song("Wide Awake") on this "dance punk" album instantly grabbed me and then I realized it was because it reminded me of a far better "dance punk" song that came out 15 years ago("House of Jealous Lovers"). This band has talent but I struggle to get into such an emotionless and one note set of songs. There's a few good jams here surrounded by weaker and less interesting versions of those same songs. I remember first ... read more

Hey Usher, zero effort equals zero results. Absolutely pathetic.

Solid little album. Short and sweet

Kurt Vile must have had great parents because someone had to build up that ego to make him think any of these songs should run over 10 minutes long. But in all seriousness, the shtick has gotten so old and Vile's voice grows more annoying with each new album. Even when returning to Wakin on a Pretty Daze, I find myself losing affection for it. Something changed in this guy when Smoke ring came out and it was hailed as major growth and success. Ironically, for me in particular, it's his work ... read more

Competent but not much more. The spoken word sections are obvious and distracting and the music itself is fine but rarely special.

I'll never fully believe that this whole album isn't specifically about Drozd's heroin addiction. Also, Wayne Coyne is cool and all but Drozd is the irreplaceable genius behind the Flaming Lips. Only a handful of musicians have ever orchestrated a record of this caliber. It's perfection.

One of THOSE albums. The kind that makes you realize you want to live your life searching constantly for new music to make you feel the way this one does. Hopefully you discover it at as young an age as possible so it can live and grow with you.

Still aggressive and gorgeous but unlike New Bermuda or even the phenomenal Sunbather, this record does not waste one second of its hour run time. Everything here is impeccably crafted. A truly stunning listen.

I'm not a metal guy at all but High on Fire is one of the handful of metal acts that I will make sure to listen to whenever they release new material. Sadly, this wasn't a standout for me although there were some moments I enjoyed. I will not give ratings to metal albums unless I really enjoy them or dislike them.

Reminds me of Waka in his ability to completely annoy me and make me want to lift a car at the same time.

Lenker is one of the most talented people making music right now. The guitar work is gorgeous and lyrically her work is always of the highest caliber.

Wow, such a pleasant surprise. On first listen I greatly prefer this to Muchacho. I've always found Houck's music leaving something to be desired. Pretty good but could never understand the love given by his loyal fanbase. Happy to say I've finally connected with one of his albums and this is probably going to be my album of the week.

Breezy and bluesy with Marshall's ever present ability to toe the line of pretty and tough. These songs are simple and some are for sure throwaways but it's a welcome return and as of right now I'm enjoying this calmer set of songs more than her previous effort. Her intensity is replaced with a lovely sense of control.

Yeah it's a little different and a little better but they're still the same band and still make essentially the same style of music as before. This is still a subpar band that makes subpar music made for easy consumption by the masses. It has some catchy moments and is competently made. I even caught myself saying ok that's not bad at a couple points. But that doesn't make an album good. I will never have any song off this album in rotation and I'm willing to bet quite a few of you won't ... read more

Possibly Dan's best. One of my favorites from his catalog.

Though marred in controversy, this is easily the groups most gorgeous set of songs from a musical standpoint. Not to say it's necessarily their best but the music here is more mature, melodic and clean, sounding ironically like a band at the peak of its powers. And considering most of this was recorded before the accusations, that should come as no surprise. Skylight remains mostly unchanged in the year since it was initially meant to be released and it was meant to be the holy grail that ... read more

European Heartbreak is occasionally catchy but rather quickly drifts into the background, becoming just another fine if unremarkable indie rock record.

Though maybe not as striking as some of the best tracks from contemporaries such as Alvvays or Japanese Breakfast, the new Hater record reminds of the highly overlooked Memoryhouse in just how consistent it is. It never dulls throughout and very subtly wraps you around it's finger. It's breezy and tender and is their best effort yet. It will probably be forgotten in a month or so but it's a shame as this is one of the years strongest indie rock albums.

Solid first listen and Lillie West has a commanding if lackadaisical presence.

It's so long and the back half will really test you, as the concept wears away and each beat sounds basically the same. That being said, Lupe sounds so good on this thing. I honestly haven't given him any attention in about a decade and then yesterday I heard the amazing Manilla and had to give this a listen. I was so pleasantly surprised and can see why he still has his devoted fans. Though he's deep in his career, I hope one day he can get the right people around him and he can make the ... read more
