I rarely give out this score. That's due to change as I listen to more music, but to say something is a "100" is to imply that it is literally perfect. There can be no more improvements to something... it is flawless. The last time I gave out this score was almost two years ago now. I almost went through the entirety of 2024 without giving a perfect score. That was until I heard this album.
I was bored in class, so with free time to kill, I decided that my playlist got boring ... read more
Yeah, one of my few classic hot takes. This thing… is… supremely overrated. I think many people treat this thing a little less positively than they used to, and have moved on to his later work, because this thing is a mess. I will start by saying I am not at all into bossa nova music. I like how it sounds, but am completely unfamiliar with that world. The songs here just pass you by before you even realize they were there. It’s kind of irritating. He has cool ideas but ... read more
Gosh. Besides a few “lows” on this, like the instrumental track and the intro, this was gorgeous. This one kinda shocked me as I’m going year-by-year. While the albums that are classics I have all generally loved so far, this is one of the few I have loved that completely went under my radar. This seems to be overshadowed by a lot of her other work. If this is not one of her best works, then man, I would be in for a trip listening to her discography. She has a voice ... read more
I think the almost-progressive metal type of keys on this thing are corny as hell, and in general, it doesn’t really do a lot for me in terms of its dark ambient direction. Overall, well performed, and I like the vibe, but there’s just some things here technically that don’t intrigue me whatsoever.
I mean, what could I say about this album except that it’s one of the most important albums ever made? This thing is so in your face. Ornette Coleman was so ahead of his time I can imagine people listening to him and thinking he’s some sort of witch. Because this is IN YOUR FACE. He’s like a Jazz Robert Johnson skill wise. I don’t think there’s anyone technically better than Coleman in saxophone. He was one-of-a-kind. Sometimes this thing isn’t super ... read more
Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon 5/?
So, it has been 11 months since I have done my Red House Painters discography listen. I was in the midst of doing a Bob Dylan discography listen, and saw that I stopped this one quite curiously with three albums left, so, what the hell.
I long thought this one would be a masterpiece. The only song I knew from this was San Geronimo, and that song is a MASTERPIECE. There are barely any songs out there that are better than that one. That is Mark Kozelek's ... read more
There is a song on this album that is quite literally not even a Juice WRLD song. Like, what the fuck? There’s songs on this thing that are at least listenable and that is the only positive thing about this. The features are garbage; Eminem’s verse was ass and Fall Out Boy are, like always, terrible. The production was awful and obviously it’ll be harder to mix a dude’s voice if he’s not here to adjust, but still, that just goes back to the fact that this thing ... read more
Gosh, the vocals get so bad here. It’s not a horrible sounding album but besides from just being generic digicore music, or just glitchy alt-pop, it’s really such a snooze. None of the songs outside the last two are that bad, but they certainly aren’t amazing. And the crooning was awful. I don’t really get what people are getting here.
Bob Dylan 15/?
“We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.”
This is pretty much the definitive break-up album. Made in the midst of a dissolution of his decade-long marriage to Sara Lownds, this is a beautiful, even heart-breaking album, where Dylan recounts the experiences of the relationship before it fell apart.
To preface, I will say that this thing is very slightly overrated. To me, while this is in many ways a ... read more
Bob Dylan 14/?
The last album in this rather messy transitional era of Bob Dylan (from John Wesley Harding to Planet Waves) was actually very solid, even if it tapered off by the end. I wish Bob Dylan explored the blues instrumentation a bit more, as it definitely got more acoustic and folk near the end of the project. Obviously, that’s what Bob Dylan is good at, but he was really vibing with the blues. This didn’t move the needle in my love of Dylan, but still, pretty good ... read more
Bob Dylan 13/?
It’s been almost a year and a half since I last reviewed a Bob Dylan album, so I did a whole discography re-listen, and I now arrive at the 1973 DISASTER that is “Dylan”. To say this thing is bad is quite the understatement. I thought the last two Bob Dylan albums were quite shaky, but still very good. This thing was just awful. Now, this is not really the fault of Dylan too much; he did not want this project released, and it was released from Self-Portrait ... read more
After my second listen, I can assuredly say this lived up to any expectation I had for Kendrick. I was not the biggest fan of Mr. Morale, and this was the exact comeback I wanted. Consistently poignant and equally daring, this is as close to a perfect project as it can get, I just feel like sometimes the more “hype” tracks maybe lose some of the focus and cohesion of the general concept, especially “gnx”. I don’t know what that was. Besides that, it is perfect, I ... read more
This is such a well produced ambient album it’s actually crazy. I do think the overall concept and cohesiveness get kinda lost (which is hard to maintain for ambient projects), but this is such a nice mood. I’m very impressed.
When that Della Zyr song got sampled I actually jumped up in joy; that’s the most out-of-left-field sample choice I think I’ve ever seen in a song. There’s highs but also a good amounts of low (there seems to be like really questionable auto tuning choices on some of these vocals), but overall this is an album I’m very impressed by. This guy has the talent to go places for sure.
I’m not always a fan of the kinda compressed production choices on this and I definitely wish the songs with Chuck were longer because they were like goldmines of potential, but in general this is a really solid album all things considered. I liked the jazz-infused beats.
A victim of horrible production, Petrichor is unfortunately kind of just a what-if. Of course, my score is much lower than the track scores imply, but it’s just because that production is so murky and terrible. I understand that was probably the intention, but it genuinely is borderline unlistenable. The songs are good but not good enough to wave off the gunk off.
So discretion out of the way, I don’t really like k-pop. Buuuuut this thing was actually quite good. She has a great voice and I think the instrumentals were pretty good, too. Not much to say since it’s not a genre I’m super familiar with, but I am very surprised. That middle song gotta go tho.
If there was someone from BROCKHAMPTON who I feel could make any semblance of a solo career, besides Kevin Abstract obviously, it would be Matt Champion. He was always a fan favorite who often stole the spotlight of many BROCKHAMPTON songs. I was a HUGEEEEEE BROCKHAMPTON fan during its heyday, so I was excited to check this EP out. Matt Champion has not exactly cracked the mainstream, but he has garnered a so far pretty impressive resume all things considered. This feels kinda like a backstep ... read more
I am very honored to be the first review of this artist! I hope they can make a name for themself. Assuming this person is reading this, I really liked how you used dissonance so openly in quiet space. The vocals are not bad at all, but when they are drenched in echo, I think it might be even too dissonant, and doesn’t contrast very well with the instrumental. In general though, this is a solid debut and I love the string orchestration and constant swindle (I don’t quite know what ... read more
If this album was more like the kinda ambient and droney last track, this would actually be bareable. HOLY. This thing is ass. The guitar mix here is so painfully thin and plastic, and the vocals are so generic, derivative, etc etc etc… I truly don’t have enough words to describe how unoriginal it is. This thing really does not have much to say at all.
