You've done it again Austin. Panopticon is a band that is easily one of my favourites within the atmospheric black metal genre (which is a contender for my favourite metal genre, so that's saying a lot), I love essentially all of his previous albums. With this I obviously had very high expectations going into this new release of his, "Det hjemsøkte hjertet", the final album of The Laurentian Trilogy. And it’s safe to say my expectations have been fulfilled, no, ... read more
Last Fair Deal Gone Down is the 5th studio album by Swedish band Katatonia, released in 2001 on Peaceville Records.
This album is Katatonia's masterpiece, everything about is executed perfectly. The production is extremely lush and spacious while still not sounding overly clean and polished. The instrumental performances are super tight, especially the drumming. The sound of the guitars is quite varied, sometimes going for a heavier sound, softer sound, a more ethereal shoegaze sound, it ... read more
A genre-blending masterpiece, Classica is the 3rd studio album by Italian metal band Novembre. Released via Century Media Records on the 24th of January 2000.
This album takes elements of death-doom metal, progressive metal, gothic metal, melodic death metal and black metal, blending all of these influences together and creating a very coherent and consistent sound, which is always impressive whenever so many different influences are involved. The way this album takes that usual gothic ... read more
This album is pure filth and evil incarnate. Rain Upon the Impure is to me like being a lost soul cursed to wander a dead and forgotten world for all eternity, there is no hope, no redemption, no beauty, just rot and ruin. The production on this album is super raw and disgusting while still allowing for the atmosphere in the instrumentals and vocals to be distinguished enough for them to serve their purpose. The guitar lines are very ominous, they sound like true evil, and they help ... read more
I am MOST CERTAINLY not the target audience for this kind of music, but I gotta say I enjoyed this a decent bit more than I was expecting. I don't think its anything I'd ever return to but this album is a really well written and catchy collection of pop songs. Chappel's voice is really beautiful and she has a ton of personality. I'm not generally a fan of modern pop music since its not generally my thing, I also just despise the popular music industry. But this is very ... read more
Icon by Paradise Lost. This album is an absolute classic in every sense of the word. Following a flawed debut, an amazing sophomore album and a great 3rd album Paradise Lost release what would be the best album of their whole career (and one of the best albums ever made in general). The atmosphere of this album is so fucking awesome, they completely perfect the gothic vibe within a metal format. The riffs kick absolute ass, being really groovy but also really moody. Holmes' James Hetfield ... read more
An absolute masterpiece, the sequel literally all of us was waiting for. This will be treasured as one of the greatest pieces of art in human history. We Are Charlie Kirkπ«‘
A modern Atmospheric Black Metal masterpiece. Gnosis is the 2015 EP by Greek Atmospheric Black Metal project Spectral Lore (though it has the length of an LP, so I tend to consider it an album). This release is mostly instrumental, though since this is Atmospheric Black Metal we are talking about that doesn't particularly bother me. The riffs on this album are wholly unique, there is absolutely nothing else that sounds similar to what Ayloss does with his music. The music is mostly pretty ... read more
The individual songs on this album are all really good, but this thing is just way too long. When I listen to this kind of music I don't generally want a 70 minute endeavour. Had this been shortened by maybe 20 minutes it would've been much better. The song Mr. Blue Sky gave me some crazy nostalgia, used to love that song as a kid.
Dear Entombed. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WERE YOU THINKING WHEN MAKING THIS GIGANTIC PUTRID STINKING DISGUSTING HORRID PIECE OF DOG ASS EAR SHIT GARBAGE DOODOO BUTT BOOTY ASS ALBUM. GENUINELY, WHY THE FUCK DID ENTOMBED OF ALL BANDS DECIDE TO MAKE A BUTT ROCK ALBUM, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE A BAND LIKE ENTOMBED WANT TO MAKE A BUTT ROCK ALBUM. I implore you all, please never even go near this chemical weapon of an album. I have PTSD and need therapy now
I don't know what in tarnation could possibly have possessed Dave Mustaine that made him want to make a Megadeth song with country guitars in it, The Blackest Crow is genuinely maybe the worst song I've ever heard. This whole fucking album was a god damn assault on my ears, just straight dog shit ear ass the whole way through. I'm going to sue Dave Mustaine for psychological damage inflicted on me by this album.
I am well aware that this album most definitely deserves a much higher rating than this, but as it stands I think this is a fair rating for me. This rating will probably increase in the future. As it stands I just don't have the ear to understand nor appreciate the nuances of an album like this. I might also just not be the target audience for this kinda stuff. All that being said I still very much enjoyed my time with this album and I will return to it in the future.
What a fucking snooze fest, a thrash band as notable and well established as Kreator has zero excuses for making an album as formulaic and generic as this. The production has zero grit or edge to it, it really started to get on my nerves. Thrash production should have at least a little bit of roughness to it or it'll just fall flat. The riffs are like, fine. Generic thrash riffs with heavy Arch Enemy esque melodeath influence, they're the best part of the album though to be fair that ... read more
Wow, this thing is absolutely fucking beautiful. Her voice is insanely pretty and just soothing to my ears. The instrumentals are simple but so insanely effective and pretty. I hear some clear influence from Early Taeko Onuki in this, both in the instrumentals and melodies but also Ichiko's singing. And early Taeoko Onuki happen to be some of my favorite albums ever made so that is purely a positive. Overall this album was insanely enjoyable to listen to and I'll definitely be ... read more
This album is one of the most breath-takingly beautiful albums I have ever had the pleasure of pleasing my ears with in my whole life. This 2 hour long masterpiece is divided into two different parts, the first part being atmospheric black metal and the 2nd part being post-rocky American folk music. The first disc features some of the most beautiful soundscapes and melodies ever done in black metal period, the use of violins and cellos here and there only further how incredible the sound is. ... read more
