Hellfire took multiple listens for me to really enjoy and I think same can be said for this, while I still really love the front to back experience, feel like I didn't "get" the songs quite yet
Not really what I expected, but I still really enjoyed this album. While I like the music, the actual themes Tyler, The Creator shows here are what I'm REALLY interested in. This album definitely needs some time, and I don't really know whether it will grow on or off me, but for now this album is great.
Actually the worst album ever made, but i have to add +89 points for the LORE in the El Mañana music video, sorry I don't make the rules.
Read the pitchfork review of this album, its fucking hilarious.
+89 points because there is a song called Goon Gumpas. Also one of the IDM albums ever but that doesnt matter.
The most spacey, synth-y, and stereotypical-y proggy thing they have ever done. The production is REALLY DAMN GOOD, and the musicianship is impressive without being super obvious. Absolutely worth a listen!
This was my proper intro into metal, and god damn does it hit hard. The songs conjure such vivid ideas and really invest you into this deranged dragon apocalypse. Its campy as hell, but it adds to the records personality. Quick thrash riffs go to long pysch passages, and even some electronic in flamethrower! Pretty awesome album from one of my favorite bands.
This was one of the first albums I ever listened to front to back, and dear god this was a great pick! This album is so rich and pretty and beautiful, and shows how creative Tylers production has gotten. Each track sounds distinct, but still keeps a very cohesive sound. Moments like I Think and Gone, Gone/ Thank You make me ascend! This album is really stellar, and still sounds magical to me now.
The drumming is solid, the performances are memorable, and Serj is hands down one of the greatest metal vocalists I've ever heard. The blends between alt rock and standard metal give this album a really fun sound that can appeal to normies like me, and more hardcore metal enjoyers. This album is just really effective and immediate. It seeks out to make a fun, catchy, political, absurd, metal jam, and it succeeds with flying colors
DAMN PEGGY!!!
When I first learned of this album, I has a really bad sleep schedule and consistently woke up at 4 am to go to school. Listening to this album, at 4 am, during the winter, is one of the most perfect musical experiences I've ever had. The production is great as usual, but the album sounds more rooted in making something that ASCENDS you, rather than split your head in two. Peggys rapping is on point too, great flows all around. This is one of my favorite albums for long, ... read more
Depending on how your feeling this album can go as hard as a motherfucker, or break you down to your very core. Usually both in the same listen. This album sounds like rock bottom, the intro "Downward Spiral" perfectly sets the eerie tone for this album. "Really Doe" is an AMAZING posse cut, with the music box beat and addictive chorus. And then theirs "Aint It Funny", which is a complete and utter mental deterioration and perfectly represents the entire album. The ... read more
The first 5 tracks might be my favorite 5 song run in all of metal. In Rage Against The Machines self titled, they brought a shit ton of character, politics, and genuine HEAT to the table. The songs sound similar, but still have enough variety to keep the album entertaining. It also has one of the most perfect album covers of all time. A perfect time capsule to the era it was made.
This is the kinda shit I think of when I hear "Hardcore Hip-Hop". The marching band samples are on point, some of the noises on this album are tinnitus inducing, and MC Ride isn't completely eligible yet (though he's still close). This entire album feels like a drunken stumble through a scorching city block, and I vibe with it.
Having a 93 on album of the year is insane, especially considering that score isn't high enough
I can't remember much of anything other than what this album made me feel, yet I can't stop listening to certain sections of it. Weirdly transcendental and terrifying
