NO NUANCE REVIEW

Ehhh…

Look, I do like it overall, but while “Hold The Girl” is a decent listen it’s not a very satisfying one. I think “RINA” and “SAWAYAMA” were so beloved and are so special because they were bold and adventurous pop projects in a way “Hold The Girl” rarely is, instead favoring a much more commercial sound that too often lands into mid-2000’s sappy adult contemporary. I respect her using this record as an artistic form of healing, but you can make an album that is still all those things while still being an interesting and entertaining listen - hell, I’d argue there were many moments like that on “SAWAYAMA”. There are some highlights amongst the tracklisting, but while I still listen regularly listen to “RINA” and “SAWAYAMA” years afterwards I’m not sure how often I’ll listen to even the best songs on “Hold The Girl” a year from now.
