Kate Bush - The Dreaming
100

There's a lot of directions an artist can take once they become popular. Kate Bush had many hits by the time this was being made, but instead of continuing the style she had, she just went all out. Unlike her last album, she was the sole producer here and it allowed her to experiment more. She took that opportunity and created the most unique and interesting album in her career. There's so many odd parts to this album that's it's hard to even list. The opener, Sat In Your Lap, really shows off ... read more

The Clash - Cut the Crap
5

The Clash are an iconic band, one of the most influential punk artists and have several classic songs and albums under their belt. London Calling is one of my favorite albums ever made. While there's serious weak points in their career, it's overall pretty good. What's no secret by now is that tacked at the end of their solid discography is one of the worst albums ever made. As soon as you start this album you are assaulted by Dictator, which is this Beefheart-esque mess of a song. None of the ... read more

The Brave Little Abacus - Demo?
80

The first release by the brave little abacus, and it manages to be the weirdest and most experimental release they've done. A lot of the odd sampling and shifting styles that they would go on to experiment with later in their career is present here. It's all used together really well, such as the shifting between samples and riffs on You're Not Me. It's easy to tell this is their first release, but it's also far from demo quality. There's some incredible songs on here which contend with some of ... read more

Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix
100

It's been a while since I've heard an album that's moved me as much as this. The two singles released for this album hinted at something game changing coming out, and it delivered. Every bit of this is so unique and dripping with emotion. It's dedicated to Groggs, a member of the group that passed last year. The whole album deals with the aftermath of the loss, and to me represents the 5 stages of grief being lived through. The pain is delivered through the off putting and glitchy songs. The ... read more

Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York
80

One of the most popular and well liked live albums ever, and some even call it their best release. Turning the aggressive grunge of their studio albums into acoustic songs is a nice turn, and gives the album a sense of uniqueness from everything else they've done. Personally, I do prefer the grunge to the acoustic, but this is still a really nice listen. All the great songwriting is still there, and there's less of a leaning to play the hits. Instead, the songs seem to be more based on how well ... read more

fun. - Some Nights
75

My music journey has always been built on specific obsessions with artists. The first obsession I ever fell into was fun. Their two albums were the catalyst to my entire music journey. Saying that, I can admit that I definitely have a bias towards these guys. I know a lot of people absolutely despise them, but I think they're great. Some Nights is their second album, and it's where they turned a lot more commercial. It's a lot less conceptual and frontloads the album with the big hits at the ... read more

King Crimson - The Great Deceiver: Live 1973-1974
80

4 discs and 5 hours of King Crimson. As someone who hasn't even heard their full discography, it was daunting, but it was ultimately worth it. A lot of songs on here are insane and even rival the studio versions, some passing them. They play most of their best songs from this era, as well as a couple classics and some new improvs. Disc 2 is where you wanna go if you want some of their craziest songs, although Disc 3 ended up being my favorite. That one is their most consistent and lacks some of ... read more

Jeff Rosenstock - WORRY.
100

How does one talk about their favorite album? I mean seriously, Worry is an experience that I love every second of. Every personal lyric, every fun addition, every subtle inspiration put into it, all that makes this album itself. Well, it's difficult to start this without getting more into Jeff's career and where this stands in his catalog. Jeff was the frontman of Bomb The Music Industry!, a band known for emotional songwriting packed into DIY punk songs ranging from hardcore to ska to ... read more

Lil Mariko - Lil Mariko
70

This is the debut EP of Lil Mariko, who I had known previously from Hi, I'm A Slut as well as her appearance on Ram It Down by Dorian Electra. I didn't really have much expectations for this, but it was actually pretty good. While I usually am not the biggest fan of this overly sexual stuff but this is over the top enough that it ends up being pretty funny. It all revolves around her quest to be, in her words, "the biggest fucking slut in the world". It's just incredible vulgar to a ... read more

Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Kids Still Daydream
80

Brick Body Kids is a very chill and dreamy album which keeps a pretty consistent style while still giving some room to spread it's style. What does stay the same is his beautiful rapping which just perfectly fits that dreamy mood. Every song just floats on by and drifts me with it into whatever it's attempting. This combined with the great production help to make it an ethereal listen.

Stylistically it manages to deviate itself while still sticking within the overall style of the album. As ... read more

Weezer - Raditude
20

Raditude is a unique failure of an album. Coming off the Red album, which was one of their most unique and boundary pushing albums, it seems like Weezer wanted to further tinker with their style. This album pulls in a lot of collaborators such as The All American Rejects, Butch Walker, Josh Freese of Devo, and of course Lil Wayne. There's some stylistic differences in the songs as well. Now what made Red a decent listen was that these ideas were executed quite well. Other than the great opening ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Red Album)
70

Red may not be the best Weezer album, but it's certainly the most interesting. The band starts to experiment a bit more with their style and gives us both some of their best songs and some of their worst. It's as cheesy as the cover would make you think, with stuff like a rap song and some awful lyrics thrown in there, but there is a certain charm to that nerdiness similar to Blue. It also managed to deliver us The Greatest Man That Ever Lived, which is one of the best Weezer songs and an ... read more

Weezer - Make Believe

An aggressively average album, not the worst listen ever but I sure won't be coming back to it

Weatherday - Come In
90

Come In is the debut project of Sputnik aka Weatherday which is one of the most emotionally potent and cathartic albums of its genre. It's very dynamic and switches between these powerful and noisy rock sections to more slow and somber parts. The dynamic range is incredible and only further increased by their vocal range. Sputnik switches between masculine and feminine vocals, representing the different characters of this story. The amount of influences thrown in here also helps to set it apart ... read more

Weezer - Maladroit
80

This album surprisingly turned out to be quite a blast. Pinkerton was quite heavy but Maladroit takes that even further with these noisy riffs pounding through each track. Sometimes it pulls back into something slower but it usually either is a straight on powerful song or builds up to an explosion of guitars. It doesn't do too much innovation with this style, although it occasionally dips its toes into some other genres. Some can be seen as emo adjacent and Death and Destruction almost has a ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Green Album)
55

This album is frustrating. I'll start with the good parts, and there's more good about this album than I expected. The first three songs, which do kinda sound like movie soundtrack-core, are pretty good. They're fun and have decent enough hooks. Don't Let Go especially feels super nostalgic for me even though it doesn't actually have any connection to me. Then we get to Island In The Sun, easily the best song on here. It's a very dreamy sunshine pop song with those iconic hip hips and a solid ... read more

Weezer - Pinkerton
80

Pinkerton is the infamous second album of Weezer, to some the last good album they ever made. Weezer pulled away from the poppier songs of their debut and dropped heavier songs with lyrics that are, let's say, "emotionally honest". One thing else gone from the Blue is the variety. I mean there's El Scorcho and Butterfly to break the mold but the rest of it sounds fairly similar. Not to say it's bad, a lot of these songs have incredible hooks and a lot of the amazing guitar work from ... read more

Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
100

This is going to be the first in a series of Weezer reviews, so prepare yourself for that.

I think Weezer's Blue Album is an exercise in dumb fun. This might not be the most technically insane or well written album out there, but it's hard to deny that it's just fun. It feels mostly like a bunch of guys having fun in the studio and you can really hear it. This thing might be goofy, I mean the line "What's with these homies dissing my girl" was just destined to be made fun of, but ... read more

The Flaming Tsunamis - Fear Everything

Three words:
Experimental ska metal
Need I say more?

black midi - Cavalcade
85

I was really excited for this, as many other people were. The singles were absolutely amazing and John L quickly became my favorite song from this year. Add on to it that Schlagenheim was an incredible album, and this was working out to be one of my favorites of this year. This album opens with John L, which as I said earlier, is one of the best of this year. It's absolutely manic in every way and every second of the song I'm sitting at the edge of my seat dripping with anxiety. It's a lot like ... read more
