The Strokes - Future Present Past
68

A little tease to their future after the dormant years post-Comedown Machine. In retrospect, they definitely still have ways to go with how they would evolve their sound: Drag Queen feels too rough and flimsy to fully enjoy. But it does lay out a plan for the future; a plan they would masterfully execute.

The Strokes - Comedown Machine

The Strokes continue to try to evolve their sound, and they do sound more cohesive this time around. But there's a couple tracks where they seem quite disinterested in what they're doing, and it does distract from the heights of the album. Ultimately they still deliver an eclectic set of tracks, solidifying falsettos and synths to their repertoire of abilities.

The Strokes - Angles
74

It's definitely not the most cohesive album ever made, but man, it's still fun as heck. You have the expected rock bangers like Under Cover of Darkness, and successful style shake-ups like Machu Picchu, Gratisfaction and Life is Simple in the Moonlight. At its worst, I can still respect the attempt to experiment with new sounds.

The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth
44

I used to vaguely like this album, but it has aged very badly. The darker, edgy vibes are especially such a turn off for me now. It does still have some great tunes like You Only Live Once and Razorblade, but most of the album is either too edgy or too boring.

The Strokes - Room on Fire
89

The sequel is usually worse, and it rings true here. But I just can't care about that, The Strokes pretty much captured another lightning with the same bottle as before.

98

Some of the snappiest, tightest, and coolest garage rock you'll ever hear. Julian oozes style with his singing, as the rest of the band conjures some of the catchiest rock rhythms made by man.

Tame Impala - Deadbeat
74

I completely understand why this album is so mixed in reception, but I beg to disagree with the haters. As far as I'm concerned, it still had the same weaknesses of Kevin's non-Lonerism albums, in that he tends to meander on a specific idea while not fleshing it out further. But it still has that lovable Tame Impala energy of trying stuff out and having fun while doing it. My strongest complaint would be that I wish it's more lyrically dense.

Tame Impala - The Slow Rush
77

This album really grew on me. I appreciate some of the poppier edge that it has compared to Currents, and the general brightness of the sound is more appealing to me. But I do want more sharp and energetic tones from this album's sound.

Tame Impala - Currents
76

A slow and beautiful exploration through thick, layered synth soundscapes. Kevin does stretch it a bit too much in the deeper cuts, but highlights like Let it Happen keep it away from being too meandering.

Tame Impala - Lonerism
92

The peak of Kevin's psychedelic adventures. Incredibly dynamic tracks from top to bottom, and very cohesive as a whole.

Tame Impala - InnerSpeaker
64

Very spacious and atmospheric psych rock. It likes to take its time doing its thing, I would say that most of the tracks here doesn't feel tight. But it's a decent appetizer for what's to come in Lonerism.
