Even with the annoying vocal performances and disjointed instrumentals, it should be noted that Tommy Lee is stepping way out of his comfort zone here and admittedly there are some pretty interesting experimental production choices.

20 years after the release of White Pony Deftones' artistic growth seems to be somewhat stunted. This album didn't really feel like the culmination of over 2 decades worth of fantastic alt metal. There's lot of great moments here but far too often the record dips into redundant shoegaze passages and follows easily identifiable formulas that have grown stale at this point. An interesting and intimate look into Elverum's past but I found it hard to stay fully engaged at every minute of this 44 minute song with the limited sonic pallet that it has. Still, a quaint and beautiful listen nonetheless.
