I feel like it's very hard to write an album about self loathing and insignificance without coming across disingenuous but Elliot smith is so damn good at taking time to put a really convincing and rewarding painting in all his albums I've heard

He has been at the forefront of pop music for nearly a decade at this point and absolutely dominated electronic pop (along with Dua Lipa.) The lyrics and narrative are by far the best part about this album, I think the first half sets you up with thinking it's gonna be a story along the lines of 'creep' by radiohead but then it takes a pretty abrupt turn in the last 4 songs. But I wish the music supported the storytelling a bit more, all the songs sounded fine I guess but there could have been some interesting ideas with the instrumentation some songs like 'Cemetery gates' and 'there is a ... read more
