Garfield's TLDR: "?eht ni tahW"
I liked this one a lot too but it isn't as good as Imaginal Disk. It's definitely a bit rougher, less experimental, and less cohesive. However, this is still great! The bones of what Magdalena Bay would accomplish are all here, even with the slightly cringworthy lines in some of the tracks. All of the songs on here are catchy and have, at the very least. good production.
Best track: Hysterical Us
Worst track: Prophecy
Garfield's TLDR: "Overrated disk?"
This is my first new review in a while cuz I kinda took a long break from reviewing and now I have a ton of albums to review that I've listened to in that time. Anyways, yeah, this album is great. It's a strong 9, but not quite a 10 for me. I gotta go see Magdalena Bay live some time.
Best track: Cry for Me
Worst track: True Blue Interlude
Garfield’s TLDR: “Whole lotta mid.”
I really have no strong feelings about this album. I listened to it last week and have already forgotten almost everything about it. I did like some of the choices made with the production, but this album is just really forgettable. In all honesty, I can’t even say what my favorite track was. Maybe Pop Out due to its production? That’s one of the few I still remember anything about at this point. Maybe I should have reviewed ... read more
100 REVIEWS! THEY’LL NEVER STOP BENEMERALD! HAVE NO FEARS, HE’S GOT REVIEWS FOR YEARS!
Garfield’s TLDR: “This Sufjan man sure does cry a lot, huh? Wait… what? He’s screaming in this one? Cinema.”
I am pretty much a Sufjan Stevens glazer. The Age of Adz is my favorite album of all time, and I could go on a diatribe about how perfect that album is (which is funny, considering I didn’t even go on a diatribe in my AOA review). However, I am not ... read more
Garfield's TLDR: "And for today's 'Ask a Dog' segment, we've got a letter by Cherille from North Dakota! Cherille writes, 'Dear ask a dog, what does Odie think about the album *Oily Bastard* by Oily Bastard?' Thank you for the letter Cherille, I will ask Odie what he thinks of this album. Hm, yes, that is interesting. Alright, I asked Odie what he thinks. He says that he liked the song 'Beef Bath'. I personally didn't like the track, but ... read more
Garfield's TLDR: "Jon can sing better than this 'Oily Bastard' guy."
No offense to the guy who made this, because I'm sure he tried, but this is pretty terrible. He does not know how to sing *at all* and the production on this is rancid. I don't have much more to say because I don't want to needlessly bully an indie artist.
Best track: Do I Don't Know What To
Worst track: Ugly
THE WEEZ DIVE: DAY 5 (hey, that rhymes!)
Garfield's TLDR: "Weemo."
So, I wasn't a big fan of Weezer's "love love love" direction on the Green Album and, to a lesser extent, Maladroit. Thankfully, Make Believe continues Maladroit's turn towards more unique concepts! Let's see here: a song about wanting to live in Beverly Hills, a song about... doing nonspecified drugs, a song about... wait, I'm River's friend? He's asking me to ... read more
Garfield’s TLDR: “This sounds like Freddy Fazbear music.”
I’m just going to make this review a short one as I cannot speak to the full quality of this album. I do not speak Japanese, after all.
This artist was recommended to me by an acquaintance who really likes her music, so I decided to give it a shot for their sake. And, honestly, I think it’s a pretty good album. I think the production on here is very energetic (in a good way), although there are a few ... read more
THE WEEZ DIVE: DAY 4
Garfield's TLDR: "Hey, don't tell me not to be a slob! Every other song on this album is a generic love song, so this feels like a call-out."
On the Green Album, Weezer learned how to not be bad. Unfortunately, that came at the cost of the entire album being mediocre. On Maladroit, Weezer learned how to be good again. However, this album is still not a full recovery. Let me explain.
The negative reception to Pinkerton can still be felt on this album. ... read more
Garfield’s TLDR: “I would rather quit lasagna forever than listen to this trash ever again.”
This is genuinely the worst fucking thing I have heard in my life. To start off however, let’s side aside the fact that this is fetish music and examine it purely on its merits as a quality EP.
First up, the production is fucking rancid. The only time I ever felt that it was slightly decent was at the end of the very final track. The rest of this EP has toddler-level ... read more
THE WEEZ DIVE: DAY 3
Garfield’s TLDR: “This album is like Tuesday. Thank God it isn’t Monday, but it isn’t Friday either.”
So, after Weezer decided to release a concept album and it got absolutely dragged by critics, they disappeared for 5 years before coming back and releasing this meaningless popslop.
To be honest, this album’s lows are not as bad as the worst stuff on the Blue Album or Pinkerton. This album also has zero songs on the level of ... read more
This honestly feels like foreshadowing for "what was to come". While, on the surface, Kanye is addressing his mental issues in this album, in hindsight it honestly feels like he thought acknowledging he has issues was just as good as fixing them.
Anyways, the actual album is alright. It got pretty darned good near the end. However, the first half of the album was just okay to me, and I thought "All Mine" was really cringeworthy. "Ghost Town" was incredible though. ... read more
THE WEEZ DIVE: DAY 2
This is actually not the first time I listened to Pinkerton. I listened to it a few years back and genuinely hated it, so I was very curious whether my opinion would change upon a relisten.
So... did it?
Kind of.
I appreciate this album much more now. The first four tracks are excellent, and present the concept of the album — struggling with a combination of loneliness and a sex addiction — quite well. However, I feel that the album falls apart after this... ... read more
THE WEEZ DIVE: DAY 1
I really do not like Weezer. However, my brother loves them. So, I've decided to dive through their entire discography to find the magic.
Starting off with the Blue Album, I have to say... it's alright. There is nothing offensively bad on here. The standard pop-rock sound is about as inoffensive as things get. The lyrics on this album aren't really that great, but they aren't awful either. Overall, the album is just a notch above mid due to some ... read more
There's definitely some peak Kendrick stuff in here, mixed with some more stripped-back stuff (not necessarily a bad thing), as well as a dud or two. Everything in here adds up to a good album overall.
Best track: reincarnated
Worst track: gnx
Y'all are crazy for hating this. It's no "The Wall" but it is still a great album and Roger absolutely does bring it across the finish line (even with how very little Gilmie and Nick appear on this album). I love the anti-war concept of this album and its themes are still prescient to this day. Also, how could I hate this with how much an absolutely jaw-dropping opener "The Post War Dream" is? I knew this album still had the Rog juice as soon as I heard: ... read more
Jesus Christ, what an amazing album. I think that Javelin is just a bit short from being a 10, but it really is up there. The album opens incredibly strong with Goodbye Evergreen, really giving me an Age of Adz vibe when it goes full blast and blows out your ear drums. The first three songs on this album are, honestly, pretty much perfect. Shit Talk is also a really good closer to the album.
Also, this album is fucking heartbreaking. Sufjan’s SO died and he goes and writes an album about ... read more
This EP is literally just some songs plucked from Revolver repackaged with the SFF single. Yes, all four songs on here are great, but you’re better off listening to Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane via the original single or via Magical Mystery Tour, and you’re much better off listening to And Your Bird Can Sing and I’m Only Sleeping via Revolver.
This should not be the #1 ranked “album” of 1967.
Edit: I'm decreasing my score from 70 to 60 because this ... read more
