Pinned Review

Joey Beltram - Beltram, Vol. 1

A legendary EP that defined the early 90s acid techno scene. This is in my opinion the superior ep to the Energy Flash EP, which is essentially a reissue the year after. The track "Energy Flash" specifically was massive in western Europe and particularly the UK, despite Beltram being out of NYC, and is heralded as a total classic, particularly for Belgian electronic label R&S Records. The bassline is ridiculous, I mean what the fuck is that bassline. Unreal. A classic mix of 707 ... read more

Metronomy - The English Riviera

As I've just started doing reviews again after a very long hiatus, I remembered how significant this album is to me. It makes me feel extremely nostalgic and melancholy. And I usually don't feel this way that often. For most people it probably wouldn't. So here's the backstory:

Metronomy is a British band and this record is a tribute to the "English Riviera", also known as Torbay, a seaside resort in Devon that brags its seldom Spanish feel, yet a quintessential holiday destination ... read more

Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing

It's nothing revolutionary or unorthodox, but man... what an incredible voice. I'm not even a big singer-songwriter fan but as a listening experience and as long as you don't overthink it, it's absolutely stunning. Serious lack of ratings on here. Also, screw early Pitchfork.
Yves Tumor - Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)

First off, I definitely need to have a few more full listens, but I will say, this is very good. I was a little sceptical honestly, I know how well-received Yves Tumor's work is and I very much enjoyed "Safe in the Hands of Love". I found their previous album not on par, however, but I absolutely need to revisit it because it was a while ago since I dug into it.

Disregarding the ostentatious title, this is a pretty amazing take on the Art Rock genre; full of meaning and nuance. And ... read more

Fever Ray - Radical Romantics

Having received promising singles that got me looking forward to Fever Ray's new conjuring, "Radical Romantics" leaves me somewhat lukewarm. Roughly halfway along, particularly after Kandy, the album seems to take a sizeable plunge (get it) downward with the exception of "Carbon Dioxide", which is a solid highlight. The tracks just feel very off and unfocused from thereon, particularly "Looking For A Ghost" and the closing track. I honestly was expecting this to be ... read more
Gorillaz - Cracker Island

Yeah, I can't deny my slight disappointment. Then again I didn't enjoy Sound Machine a great deal, so I wasn't expecting anything grand in the first place this time around, but this is arguably worse. I definitely think Gorillaz's prime is long gone. They had a good run.

Never thought I'd prefer an Ava Max record over a Gorillaz, but here we are.

Favourite Track: Cracker Island
Least Favourite: Tormenta

Yo Benjo! I’ve been getting inspiration to make another community list in these past few days, and I’ve just thought of a question that kind of interested me to see people’s choices; what’s a song you know that sounds super happy but is actually sad, due to lyrical content and/or backstory? Feel free to ignore if you’re not interested in answering, but make sure to keep your selections limited to 1 or 2 picks if you do. Reasonings are optional :)

You're welcome. Hope you enjoy them.

I've gotta check out KAS:ST's album since what I've heard of them, they're quite versatile in sound.
