The Weeknd - Dawn FM

One of my most anticipated albums of the year dropped sooner than expected but the early release is welcome. Abel's After Hours was my favourite album of 2020 so I was heavily anticipating this one. Let's just say Dawn FM didn't disappoint, however, it didn't completely blow my mind on the first couple of listens.

The production on all songs is stellar but it gets to the point where it isn't easily distinguishable between tracks as there is a bit of lack of variance in production amongst the ... read more

It has its highs and its lows, and for me the track perm was unbearable. I like the synth funk style he took with this album but it feels messy in some moments. I also feel like his lyricism took a hit in favour of the catchier tunes. That's what I like and 24K magic are bangers though.

Favourite Lyric: Don't look too hard
Might hurt yourself

Least Favourite: Perm

On his sophomore effort, there is improvement in the variation of instrumentation throughout the tracks and improved lyricism but there are some recycled flows in his singing. The final three tracks to me were all uninteresting, and again he sounds off on the reggae song on the track list. The track 'Locked out of Heaven' is sooo catchy, I remember it being my ringtone a while back, it still sounds great, so does the other singles as well. Overall, the album is decent.

It's an okay debut with catchy tunes. Grenade still sounds great till this day. But this album suffers like most other mainstream pop albums do, no cohesion and the non-single tracks just sound extremely inferior. Talking to the moon is such a great ballad and is still one of his best tracks. On the track Liquor Store Blues the reggae sound he was trying to pull off sounded awkward to me.

I tried my best to go into this with an open mind. Lorde's two previous albums are both in my top 50 of all time at the time of this writing, so I just had to believe in her despite some confusing singles leading up to this project.
The Path is a great opener with some clever lyricism and melodies in the verses and choruses, the outro sounds good and the chanting, "I hope the Sun will show us the Path" which leads up to Solar Power is clever. Solar Power is a great track about ... read more

I enjoyed this one quite a lot. It may be a step down in lyricism compared to Vessel and the production as well took a hit in order for a more radio friendly sound but it is still good. All songs are catchy but some songs have confusing production choices like the reggaetón groove on Polarise. On the song Not Today I feel like the most pop sounding track literally has a bridge with Tyler just singing "Ooh ooh yeah", I didn't quite like that. The highlights for me include the ... read more
