The album's social commentary mostly centered around religion, technology and politics demonstrates an artist who is a writer first and musician second. Father John Misty somehow captures the cynicism of modern life without sounding pretentious. He makes it perfectly clear that he too is part this; he too contributes to the ills of society. As of November 2018, it is my favorite album of the year. It's kinda experimental but no so much it feels esoteric. I generally don't try to predict future classics but I think in time people look at "Testing" as a high watermark in Rocky's discography.

Like many, Trench took me by surprise. Not that I ever had a negative opinion of their previous work, but this album appeals to my sensibilities much better than Blurryface. I felt Blurryface didn't really know what it wanted to be--pop, rap, indie rock? On trench, Twenty One Pilots seem to have found their sound.
