the highlights are great, it’s tops out as some quality early gothic post-punk that doesn’t feel too new wave for me - but sadly the songs that don’t quite hit that spot are probably slightly under what those are on ‘Tinderbox’, which leaves them pretty even in my books
i was wondering when my next controversial review would be
lets not beat around the bush here; I think it’s okay… good even. great? probably not honestly.
i much prefer when it’s at its catchy abstract best like on ‘Takyon (Death Yon)’ and ‘Klink’, but a lot of the project feels slightly like an overly harsh mix of sounds with no sense of purpose. yes, i get it, the appeal of Death Grips is their chaos and abrasive nature but i just wished their ... read more
some really classic 80s power pop stuff ! pretty good all around
For an atrist as reveered, and an artist with such a dense, varied catalogue, there isn't much to comment on when it comes to 'Halfway to a Threeway' - it's just so effortlessly well excecuted, tidy, and polished chamber pop / indie folk. The record is crisp, charming and intimate, it's just very good.
47 minutes of perfectly good math rock
that’s about it really
Mount Eerie's ACTUALLY eerie creepy uncle who has an awfully unpleasant odor that you weirdly can't pinpoint.
The main chunks of this album - the 2 tracks in the middle - are 16 minute plus pieces of improvised freak-folk, forntiered by the jagged guitar sound that's sprawled all over the place. It provides a really effective way of presenting the atmosphere of discomfort and gloom, especially when Dawson's shrewd vocals are incorporated to make for an enchanting, fiery ... read more
hahahahhahahahahahhah the album cover is a can!!!!! do you get it???? it's a can!!!!! like the name of the band!!!! Can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
much like ‘Funeral’ - ‘The Suburbs’ dishes up a wonderfully neat, well-crafted, poignant album
the moon glistens out through the window that i press my right shoulder up against, and the sun scatters its setting glow out into the sky to my left. it’s not raining or anything, but it looks sharp outside. I sit and stare and i long for the things i love and miss. the sun may set every night but it leaves an opportunity for us to appreciate how beautiful the moon really is, and how deathly important our big glowing star of fire up in the sky is. life may have its sharp winters - make ... read more
a post-punk post-rock ambient-influenced blend that i feel throws a little too much at the wall in hopes that things stick
while, no, I’m not saying that there’s too much going on - in fact the album is extremely bleak in places - but it’s that it has too many ideas, more abstract ideas, going on at once.
the project is by no means bad though, Women create the atmosphere they were going for pretty well throughout and the instrumentation is very solid. vocally i don’t ... read more
a very intriguing, attention-retaining and well-excecuted piece of 2000s abstract hip-hop
I absolutely ADORE Jeff Buckley, so when i listened to one of his father Tim’s most acclaimed works ‘Starsailor’ i was a little surprised when it didn’t fully hit the spot for me.
Now though - i’d seen that Tim had actually delved a lot into a more funk oriented sound later on in his career, after ‘Starsailor’, funnily enough, as the sales simply weren’t coming in. And so when i got recommended this live record, i was pretty damn ... read more
kinda doesn’t do anything for me I’m afraid. the soothing atmosphere is welcomed but apart from that it’s rather uninspiring
the pop rock / alt rock / grunge / singer-songwriter melting pot comes out quite enjoyable here but i think it could do with some refinements. Alanis’ vocals are definitely well suited though, as she shines through quite often - although her songwriting is, while sometimes effectively tongue-in-cheek, often a little eyebrow raising.
Deftones’ first wonder into a more shoegaze-y atmosphere-led project and i think they do a brilliant job of it. there are a handful of weaker songs here and there but Deftones deliver a very solid alt metal album here as they’re so consistently capable of
shoutout to all my Peruvians
it’s nice, it’s interesting, it’s lush and it’s elegant. this is some really solid psych folk, especially for ‘73
if there was one album that could be described as a cozy fireplace - it would be this one
The Bends meets Broken Social Scene meets China… this thing is GOOD. REALLY GOOD.
