Metro Boomin is one of my favorite producers of the last 10 years, and while 21 Savage has had his moments, I’ve been waiting for him to fully capitalize on his potential. I was hoping this would be the moment, as the hype for this album was immense. And while it would be nearly impossible to exceed expectations when they’re that high, to some extent I think he comes close.
Savage Mode 2 isn’t perfect, but it nails the vibe it’s going for. The haunting and chilling vibe in the production is fantastic, and the horror movie homages throughout the album further that aesthetic. The production is the stand out, but even 21 Savage has some personality and a presence on here which he rarely has. There are some misses, especially when he deviates from this haunting sound, but nothing on here is bad. If this project was a little shorter and a little more consistent, this would be one a modern day trap classic, but as is it’s still a great sequel to the first Savage Mode.
