REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #6
This album is a beautiful blend of many different Tyler albums into a near perfect body of work. Coming off Flower Boy, which is my favorite album of all time, this meant expectations were high. It's safe to say that Tyler met them with an unexpected, but phenomenal listen.
At first, I couldn't really get into it though. Sonically, I thought it sounded beautiful and I didn't think it was bad at all, but it was just a lot to take in. All I ... read more
REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #5
One day I will explain how much I love this album and why it’s my favorite album of all time…but for now let me just give it an 100 and leave it at that.
REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #4
How to even describe this album. I’ve been listening to it for years and I still don’t know. It’s almost impressive how difficult to pin down this album is. First, the mixing is SO BAD on here. The vocals are so consistently poorly mixed and it’s so distracting lmao. And while there are some absolutely dreadful songs, there are some fantastic ones, such as “Fucking Young/Perfect”, “Smuckers” ... read more
REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #3
When I first went back through Tyler's discography, I was hoping to find where he first released an album that capitalized on his potential in some form. Wolf is that album, and still is one of his best projects.
At the time, this was Tyler's best album. The story on this album is executed well and his production is much improved as well. This album is a little too long and has a lot of filler that could have been cut, but there ... read more
REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #2
Coming back to Goblin now has shown me how poorly this album has aged. And after hearing how good his production was on Flower Boy and IGOR, this album becomes even worse in comparison. Because on many spots on this album, the production is terrible. That’s not to say there isn’t any good production, because there are many moments that show glimpses of what he would later perfect, but it’s just clear that he has improved ... read more
REVISITING TYLER, THE CREATOR’S DISCOGRAPHY #1
Tyler, The Creator is one of my favorite artists ever, and his music has been ridiculously important to me. So with his new album coming in less than 48 hours, I decided to go back and revisit his discography. So let’s start with Bastard:
Looking back on this tape, you can see the growth of Tyler as a writer and producer. While there are many moments I enjoy a lot on here, there aren’t a lot of super memorable tracks. Bastard, ... read more
I completely get (and in theory really like) the awkward, strange and absurd vibe that he is going for here, and I really like a lot of the lyrics, but this album just misses the mark and ends up being kinda annoying a lot of the time.
I had heard of Hobo Johnson, but I hadn’t heard any of his actual music until recently when I heard his “I want to see the World” single on Fantano’s New Music Friday stream and thought it was terrible. I wasn’t even planning on ... read more
“Who Hurt You?” is a great singer-songwriter EP that fully displays Jensen McRae’s insane talent vocally and as a songwriter, and solidifies her as one of the most promising artists in this genre.
Jensen McRae is an artist I first discovered through her viral Phoebe Bridgers parody tweet. From there, I saw that she had released a few singles and loved them instantly. These two singles were “Wolves” and “White Boy”, which are two immaculately written ... read more
I went into this REALLY wanting to love it, and while I do still really like it and there are a lot of highlights, I can’t help but be underwhelmed due to how much potential Backxwash has.
I liked Backxwash’s last record, but I thought it didn’t always feel fully realized. I was hoping this new album would improve upon the shortcomings of her previous album, and while I do think it’s better, I still see room for improvement. One thing that doesn’t need ... read more
This album has some fantastic production and transitions, and while it may solidify Pi’erre Bourne as one of the best and most creative producers in trap today, it also unfortunately further solidifies that he leaves a lot to be desired as a rapper.
Pierre is one of my favorite modern trap producers, and he’s certainly been one of the most influential recently. And while his minimalist yet catchy and hypnotic beats filled with synth melodies and simple and effective trap drums have ... read more
“Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land” is not a perfect album, and there are some notable flaws, but I think it manages to overcome them with some great production and songwriting.
This was my introduction to Marina, and I had no idea what this album was going to be when I pressed play. I hadn’t heard any of the singles, and I hadn’t really heard of Marina before. Also, while the user score was good, it wasn’t great and I heard some mixed things, so I was just ... read more
This album has broken me so I gave up on a structured review. Here’s a ramble:
This album is so devoid of anything interesting that I genuinely don’t know what to say. I literally have been listening to this album for like a week trying to figure out what I think about it, but I am just baffled. Every time I listen it just ends up being in in the background and I just end up forgetting it’s on. I guess that’s impressive though right? I guess I’ll give Maroon 5 ... read more
Slayyyter’s debut album isn’t the best thing I’ve heard in this lane or anything, but it’s ridiculously fun and a nice addition to the hyperpop genre.
I hadn’t heard of Slayyyter until last month, where I heard her single “Over This!” on Fantano’s New Music Friday stream. I thought that song was really catchy and fun, and it put Slayyyter on my radar. And while I didn’t love any of the other singles she had out at the time as much, I did ... read more
Well that was a short retirement lol
Edit: here’s my actual review
Logic please release music on this level going forward.
I have always wished I liked Logic’s music more than I actually did. But since he announced his retirement, I’ve liked what he’s done more, whether it be No Pressure or the Doc D mixtape he did. I haven’t gotten around to the MadGic singles, but his recent stuff has actually made me not opposed to more official Logic music. And this single ... read more
Get ready for this to get nominated for like 6 Grammys next year for no reason lmaooo
Edit: ok here’s my actual review
While I think H.E.R still has a lot of potential, “Back Of My Mind” is less a realized album and more a vehicle for HER to release 21 cleanly produced, listenable, but in many cases ultimately forgettable songs that I’m sure will earn her more industry acclaim, but I think it ultimately hinders her artistry in the process.
H.E.R has had one of the ... read more
This is a solid song, but it sounds more like a middle of the album track than a single to me.
I’m not super familiar with Vince’s music, but I did like the songs I’ve heard in the past. I was excited to hear this single though, and hearing he has a new album in July was exciting as well. And while this song is good, it’s a little underwhelming as a lead single. The production is really good, and Vince sounds good over it, but it just ends up being a little boring. ... read more
Edit: this grew on me. 75 to an 80.
This song has a cool vibe and sounds really good, but it doesn’t really go anywhere. Really cool hearing Don Toliver and Kali Uchis on a song though.
Don Toliver is one of my favorite new voices in trap, as he has a voice and presence that’s really refreshing. His production is also usually pretty great as well, which manifested in his debut “Heaven Or Hell”, which I absolutely loved. Since then, he released “What You ... read more
While I’m a little disappointed with this project because of how good it could have been, and because I thought it was going to be an album, it’s still a really enjoyable, fun, and promising EP with some great highlights.
Rebecca Black (yes, that Rebecca Black) has actually released some solid singles this year. These singles overall weren’t amazing, but they were really fun and included “Girlfriend”, which is one of my favorite pop singles of the year. So when ... read more
This song was my introduction to Clairo and I’m really impressed, as “Blouse” is a beautiful and folky song with some great songwriting and really nice vocals.
I’ve heard people talk about Clairo and her music positively before, but I’ve just never gotten around to listening to any of it. But after this song, I’m definitely going to listen to her debut before this upcoming album because I like this a lot. I really like what Clairo and Jack Antonoff made ... read more
“This new Jessie J song is great” is not a sentence I thought I’d be hearing in 2021 but here we are. But somehow it actually is great, and another solid song in this disco revival trend.
“I Want Love” is not doing anything I haven’t heard done better, but it’s still super enjoyable. The production sounds great, the hook is solid, Jessie J’s vocal performance is great, and don’t even get me started on THE FUCKING KEY CHANGE!! It’s ... read more
