While at times this is trendier and not as consistent as some of the best projects from Griselda, La Maquina still has some great highlights, production, and performances from Conway and the features he brings on.
I’ll always be interested in new Conway music, but I was a little worried about how much music he has been dropping lately. Griselda typically prefers quantity over quality, and while Westside Gunn has been the epitome of this, Conway for the most part had been taking more time ... read more
Young Thug, Gunna, and YSL come through with an album that has some solid highlights and features, but unfortunately is just too long and isn’t consistent enough to reach its full potential.
I was excited for this, but my expectations dropped a little based on the few singles and the strange rollout. I was hoping this wouldn’t be a bloated project and that Young Thug would actually try, but then I saw the run time and that Gunna was attached to the entire project as well and got ... read more
Even if this new version was terrible (which it isn’t), just the fact that she got a collab with Elton John is already really cool and exciting. Unfortunately, while it’s cool that it exists and is a good rendition, I’d rather listen to the original.
Now, I do like the original more, but this version is interesting to listen to. I like what they did with the production, as it’s very similar to the original, but there are some noticeable differences. I also love ... read more
Roadrunner feels like the next step in the evolution of Brockhampton and is almost exactly the kind of album I was hoping for from them. This is my favorite Brockhampton album.
Looking back over the last few years, not too many artists have been as important to my music taste as Brockhampton. It was around the time I got into Brockhampton that I started broadening my music taste, and their music has been a huge part of my life and has in a way felt like the soundtrack to the last few years ... read more
This song is decent and has elements that I like, but I just don't get the hype behind it and why it could potentially debut at #1 on the Hot 100 next week.
Suburban white kids are losing their minds over this song, and as one himself I just don't get it. I mean, I should love this; I've always been a sucker for some good melodic rap, but this and a lot of Polo G's other stuff just doesn't connect with me. There is absolutely nothing unique or interesting about this song. The production is ... read more
Edit: this grew on me a lot. 75 to an 85.
Doja Cat had a huge 2020. Say So was a monster hit, Doja did some major collaborations with artists like Ariana Grande & The Weeknd, and she got multiple Grammy nominations. I also have really liked some of Dojo's music in the past, especially her singles, so this lead single for her next project was highly anticipated for me, and to have it feature SZA only raised my expectations. And while I do like the song and think it's solid, I'm a little ... read more
I really liked Tkay Maidza's EP from last year, and I'm very excited for this upcoming EP, but unfortunately this is yet another single that I like but doesn't blow me away.
The instrumental isn't super crazy or anything but it does provide a nice foundation for Tkay, but I just don't think she does much with it. The hook is not very good and she doesn't have as much of a presence on the track as I've come to expect from her music. Also, some of the lyrics are obviously intend to be playful ... read more
Finally, the answers to the questions: “Can Justin Bieber get worse?” and “What it Justin Bieber made MLK Interlude a whole EP?”.
Somehow I didn’t know this existed until like a half hour ago, and I would really like to go back. When I saw the album cover I was confused af, and then I saw the genre and thought “this has to be fake”. I then played the first song...and the first fucking thing I hear is Bieber sing “Big up to my bruddas” ... read more
I love Tierra Whack so much.
Tierra Whack's rollout has been a little strange and messy, and dropping a single at 10AM on a Tuesday without announcing it on social media is a weird move, but hopefully this means the album is coming soon because I NEEEEED it. I love Whack World, but she really has the potential to drop a full length classic. Other than Peppers & Onions, the singles in 2020 didn’t blow me away, and this one still doesn't, but it's just really well-done, fun and ... read more
If you don’t listen to a lot of different music and are interested in 19 of the same formulaic song, then I guess this is for you. For me though, I guess this is ok while it’s on, but it’s ultimately extremely boring.
I knew Rod Wave had a fan base, but I was shocked that this sold as much as it did the first week. I mean, I don’t mind Rod Wave; I think he has an interesting voice and delivery, and when he comes through with some good writing and a great instrumental, ... read more
Wow. Soul Train is probably the worst song I’ve heard this year.
I don’t think I even have the words to describe how terrible this album is. This is legitimately some of the worst music I’ve heard from a signed rapper in a while. It also did not need to be 20 songs, and the unnecessary length of the album adds to the terrible experience that this album provides. Also, the production is basically just a bunch of type beats from YouTube, and over them Nahmir either comes ... read more
Destined 2 Be Mid
Lil Tjay has somehow managed to capture an audience heavily made up of suburban white kids that think his music is fantastic, and I’ve never really understood how or why. I’ve always found his music to be painfully average and boring, and never really seen what made him stand out in this lane of melodic trap. His music is typically just the standard formula of melodic piano trap beat with some mediocre auto-tuned vocals. I mean, on a song where the instrumental is ... read more
“I don’t care if you’ve got a dick and I don’t care if you’ve got a WAP, I just want to love.” - Demi Lovato, 2021
I appreciate what she was trying to do with this album and I commend her for being open, but this album is just unfortunately too long and doesn’t have enough compelling songs to make this anything more than decent for me.
If this album was 10-12 tracks, it still wouldn’t be fantastic but it would be a much better experience, ... read more
Definitely a solid single that I like quite a bit, but it just feels kinda basic for Freddie Gibbs and as result it's a little too boring.
The production, while not terrible at all, just isn't all that interesting and feels a little too standard for this sound. Freddie Gibbs comes through with a pretty good performance though, and is probably the main reason I think this ends up being pretty good. His hook is really catchy, he flows over the beat well, and he has some solid energy that keeps ... read more
Strange choice to release two singles where only one member in the group actually has a verse.
While I do like this song, I’m hoping the album isn’t like this and am glad this wasn’t the first single because this is the direction I was worried they would go in.
This is a solid song, but it doesn’t really feel like a Brockhampton single. Most of the song is dominated by unlisted features, none of which really come through with a great performance or anything. ... read more
After the massive hit and cultural force that “Driver’s License” was, there were many different ways Olivia Rodrigo could have went with her next release, and I’m glad she went in this direction.
I liked “Driver’s License”, but I didn’t love the song as much as some other people, even if I saw her talent and was hoping she wouldn’t just continually put out Driver’s License 2.0s in the future. And very wisely, this song is not ... read more
I was skeptical of the positive reviews this was getting, and while I definitely don’t think this is a masterpiece, it’s actually pretty well executed and an extreme improvement over the other music I’ve heard from him.
While I’ve never been a Quadeca fan, I’ve thought he had talent and the potential to drop some solid music. But while I saw potential, I wasn’t expecting THIS. I didn’t even know who Quadeca was until my friend recommended his music to ... read more
This album makes me happy and makes me feel good every time I play it. I’m really glad I checked this out.
I had seen serpentwithfeet’s name before and had seen praise for his music, but up until this point I don’t think I had heard anything. But after listening to this I think I’m gonna go back and listen to his debut, because I like this a lot.
DEACON is a really beautiful and vibey album with some great vocals, lush production, and solid songwriting. Every time I ... read more
I have been waiting MONTHS for this fucking song. Thank you Lil Nas X for finally feeding us. We’re eating good.
While I didn’t love Lil Nas’s EP, I really liked him as a personality, and even on that EP he showed some potential and had some really solid highlights. He wasn’t fully developed as an artist yet, but I was hoping he would improve as time went on and as he got more experience. And just from this song and some of the other new snippets he’s posted ... read more
I think a lot of the production and some of what NF does on here could have potentially worked, just unfortunately I only think they could have worked with a different artist.
Up until this point, I had only heard the singles for this album, and I wasn’t really impressed by them. The only one that I thought was decent was “Lost” featuring Hopsin, but my reasons for thinking that song was decent had nothing to do with NF and had everything to do with the instrumental and ... read more
