Lil Dicky - Earth

Miguel pretends to be a squirrel, a mammal that loves eating nuts. Miguel is not looking for a physical nut though, as he is probably referring to the slang “bust a nut”, which means to ejaculate or orgasm. Thus, he is looking for the next girl he wants to get sexual with.

Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
75

“WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO” is a satisfying, but muddled debut, I believe. Each track has its own potential to be perfect, but I find myself disliking certain parts many songs, like the bare bass moments in BURY A FRIEND, or the pitchy vocals in 8. But overall, most of the lyrical and productional elements of the album are thoughtful and unique, and make Billie’s style stick out among her pop peers. Personally, I’m not very bothered by her immense ... read more

On “Chocolate & Cheese,” Dean and Gene tone down some of the weirdness that was present on their past albums, but still maintain their charm and unpredictability through the album’s track list. Definitely start with this album if you want to get into the brown world of Ween (lol).

Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
92

On “Titanic Rising,” Weyes Blood delivers a beautiful set of rich pop songs that really capture the bittersweet, whimsical nature of love and romance. Each track breaths life into the the next, and all together, they feel like an odyssey of earnest emotion, even if each individual track isn’t a solely independent experience. And all of this is greatly complemented by Weyes Blood’s powerful, Karen Carpenter-esque vocals. Definitely my AOTY so far.

“‘Chopsticks’ is used as a comparison for the legs of Travis' significant other. Chopsticks are two long sticks that are utilized to pick up food. Since both legs and chopsticks exist in groups of two and share similar physical properties, they are often compared to each other.” -Genius

Wow, thanks Genius! The song’s inner meaning just slipped right over my head! What a great and subtle track!

Malibu Ken - Malibu Ken

Malibu Ken is pure fun for total weirdos.
But really, this project is very solid, and I hope Aesop and Tobacco Collin more in the future.

Favorite Tracks: CORN MAZE; TUESDAY; ACID KING; SUICIDE BIG GULP; 1+1=13; CHURRO

Least Favorite Track: PURPLE MOSS

The Comet Is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
76

The Comet is Coming’s latest jazz fusion/ nu jazz record is an exciting and psychedelic set of tracks that only falter when the instrumentation becomes repetitive. Although I love the sound of the bands saxophonist, it does get tired during the second half of the album. But otherwise, this is a pretty good jazz record, and I hope that the band introduces more instruments into their arsenal to become a truly exceptional jazz band.

Flume - Hi This Is Flume
72

Flume’s latest mixtape is enjoyable while it’s on, but isn’t really made for intensive listenings. The tracks are pretty and atmospheric, but don’t have much weight to them.
Overall, the album’s decent, but I struggle to come back to it to really grasp things that are truly exceptional, aside from maybe the JPEGMAFIA track and a few others.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy - Songs for the Firing Squad
55

While this album is somewhat entertaining during a first listen, its effect dies off pretty quickly. Sure, this band has good musical chops and interesting ideas, but there are only a few times when this album felt different and unique when compared to its mathcore peers. Hopefully SeeYouSpaceCowboy will improve in the future, and add more versatile elements to their musical efforts.

NAV - Bad Habits
18

It’s this album, Nav. That’s why your Mama’s crying.
No one wants to hear you recite choruses and flex for 47.7 minutes, dude.
A recommendation: Scream uncontrollably on your next album. I need a change of pace. Anything but this, Nav. This is brainless, monotonous nothingness that restates itself over an over again.

Matmos - Plastic Anniversary
89

Matmos’ “Plastic Anniversary” is a very entertaining and versatile experimental electronic album. Around each corner, there’s a new sample or sound to get addicted to, and the fantastic production compliments the odd noises perfectly.
Although the album can be jarring with its different approaches to sampling and pitch, it never falters, since it maintains the same caffeinated energy all the way through.

Little Simz - GREY Area
88

On “GREY Area,” Little Simz delivers a set of well-rounded hip hop tracks with dizzying flows and fitting instrumentals. So far in 2019, this is definitely the most impressive and consistent album I’ve listened to so far.
My only criticisms for this album revolves around its subject matter, which can feel a bit too familiar when you consider all the conscious hip hop albums that have surfaced over the years, but Simz’s clever wordplay and purposeful lyrics revolving ... read more

Swans - Filth
95

“Filth,” Swans’ debut, is a satisfyingly sludgy no wave album. Although the album can feel one-note at times, it’s still a good album to listen to if you want to hear a disgusting and influential debut.

Favorite Tracks: STAY HERE; BLACKOUT; POWER FOR POWER; RIGHT WRONG; THANK YOU; WEAKLING

Least Favorite Track: GANG

Daughters - Daughters
88

Daughters’ self-titled record is a great evolution into more accessible territory, differing heavily, but not completely, from the band’s original grindcore-esque sound. The progressions of each track and the deadly, twangy guitars are a definite omen to their incredible 2018 LP, but the record is its own, complete monster, and it almost never falters while it’s playing.
Also, THE UNATTRACTIVE, PORTABLE HEAD is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time. The progression ... read more

“Posthumous Humiliation” is an album that ropes you in with your first listen, but doesn’t really entertain you as you return to it again and again.
I still recommend it if you like disgusting death metal, but don’t expect it to grow on you.

Favorite Tracks: EUTHANASIA; CANTICLE OF RIPPING FLESH; FUNERAL INVERSION; POSTHUMOUS HUMILIATION; RUSTED WIND

Least Favorite Track: INTO THE DECEASED

Vale-Smith - Exordium / Delicacy / Vestibule / Farce
82

Vale-Smith’s new EP is a great sampler of ethereal trap-like instrumentals. Each track feels very focused and creative, and the project as a whole feels like a major improvement of his LP from last year.
As for criticisms, all I have to say is that the vocal sampling and abrasive style off the first and last track (respectively) need a little tweaking to feel more purposeful, but overall, this EP is very enjoyable, and I can’t wait for Vale-Smith to continue to improve and expand ... read more

Gunna - Drip or Drown 2
28

This album makes me think Gunna was more bored recording it than I was listening to it, which should say a lot considering that I’m giving this album a 28.
Seriously though, this album is constantly boring due to how it functions very similarly Lil Pump’s “Harverd Dropout,” but instead of having a track list full of bangers, it’s a track list full of monotonous, sleepy trap tracks.
The only real nice thing I can say about this album is it’s occasional dreamy ... read more
