An interesting left turn for the strokes where they explore the sounds of new wave in a tasteful manner, that was a much needed change in direction for the band, songs like macchu picchu see the strokes trying new things and succeeding at it, while others like under cover of darkness see them returning to their classic sound with a more nuanced and flavorful sonic pallet. Unfortunately the songwriting isn’t there for quite a few songs here, and the second half of the album is largely forgettable and seem underwritten at times.

Best tracks: under cover, macchu pichu(!), gratisfaction, you’re so right
Worst tracks: 2 kinds of happiness(!), call me back, metabolism(sounds like b teir muse)

Rating: 68/100(fair)
