So I went to the “King Vamp” tour last night and felt I should do a proper review of this masterpiece. First off, this album plays so much better live than it does on its own. The energy was undeniable, there was a mosh pit for every song. But enough about the show, Playboi Carti took one of the hardest left turns in recent hip hop and it’s launched him into superstardom. This is the new standard for trap, highly experimental, catchy, energetic, aesthetic, creative. However, even on a trap record containing all of these characteristics it’s nearly impossible to match Carti’s vocal work. In typical Carti fashion, the lyrics are repetitive and pretty simple, but he is simply another instrument on these songs. Anybody treating him as a “lead singer” or an MC is doing themself a disservice. As stated in my Die Lit review, his vocal performances go so much deeper than just the words. He creates an entirely unique landscape of sounds using his signature garish ad libs echoing off of each other, interspersing the bars. Stop Breathing is a PERFECT example of this. On the first verse Carti is screaming “WHAT” on every off beat and it is just fucking money. One of my favorite musical moments of all time. I really don’t know what else to say, it’s difficult to capture this one in word form. You really have to see for yourself.
