Super unique feeling album, and very weird to classify what genre this even feels like really. That being said, the last song on this album is incredible! I've been listening to this album for years now yet I feel like it's such a difficult album to put into words. Post rock, shoegaze, who knows. It puts itself under some black metal but I'm really not feeling it outside of maybeee the instrumentation at times. Part of what makes it unique is how it can feel so intense and ... read more
Electronic post rock, but in absolutely no way similar to 65daysofstatic. Definitely a unique listen.
I would not be able to pick this song out of a post rock playlist at all- just sounds like "normal" post rock with very little going on to distinguish itself, but it builds up enough of an atmosphere to still be interesting.
surprisingly detailed and engaging. I fully expected yet another post rock album that sounded indistinguishable from any other "bad" post rock album, and was pleasantly surprised. To clarify what I mean by bad post rock- the genre rarely actually sounds offensively bad like other genres do, but can be boring or worse yet, completely devoid of emotion. This album does enough interesting things for me to really appreciate what it's going for, and it takes its strange ideas in ... read more
I get that a lot of people see this as Mogwai's best, but I just can't help but be disappointed. Maybe part of that is I listened to this long after getting into post rock, but this just feels so bland by pretty much every account. last song is good but otherwise, pretty underwhelming.
Probably the best of the generic post rock bands (mostly thinking between mogwai, god is an astronaut and this). Those are an arbitrary 3 and you could add bands like caspian, but really the thread connecting them is they're very accessible (for post rock) and typically the easiest albums/bands to start on. Even getting into the genre more though, this is a pretty good album, though the songs lose a lot of their luster as diverge into albums that suit your tastes more.
the inevitable "I want to get into post rock, where do I start?" album. You either start here and get into it more, or you start with swans and are forever scared of the genre. That being said, this album is wildly forgettable. It's not incredible by any means, and does not really do anything special, but I still enjoy it.
Pink Floyd boldly transitioned to making death metal! Or so I thought when I heard the message tablet 2...
I really love albums like this. While I would not hurry to give it a 10 or anything, I think it still sets out to do what it wanted. To me this is probably the "safest" album for people who aren't familiar with death metal (but want to give it a shot) to start with. There aren't many vocals, and the ones that are here aren't super harsh.
That all being said, I ... read more
Rough considering I used to like this album when it came out. And when I say like I mean it was one of the first albums I really listened to and getting away from radio or whatever.
Looking back I really don't know why I liked it, I remember feeling uncomfortable with how hateful it was but thought that was just supposed to be what music was? I don't know why I thought good music should not sound good but for some reason that's where I was at. I remember thinking his other ... read more
Despite my own expectations I did not enjoy this. By all accounts it should be something I like but even through multiple relistens I cannot help but feel like this is what metal sounds like to people who do not like metal.
I did like masc though :)
First Magdalena Bay clicks, the Radiohead clicks, now this...
Can proudly say I'm becoming both insufferable and completely lacking any personal opinions on music, as all aoty users should be. I will never get the aux, but will complain to all that do.
This album is good though, wish I gave it a better chance as a teenager, probably would've worked out better than sigur ros while staring at a ceiling.
People out here pretending they like drone but say flood 1 and 4 are boring...
This album is crazy good. Calmer moments feel like being at a calm beach, with a steady unease constantly growing, but you aren't quite sure what it is. This small blemish on an otherwise calming moment grows out of control into an effect similar to drowning or being crushed, before ultimately ceasing again. Can't believe how good this album is, and how perfectly it walks the line between tension and full ... read more
The only thing worse than Dave Mustaine's vocals is Dave Mustaine's vocals when he's not on heroin
They sobered up just barely enough to make sure people understood start to finish they hate the government.
Life is just piss and shit, and it is nothing I will miss (x20)
In all seriousness, this is a super difficult album to review. On one hand, it is such a strongly emotional album, and is completely carried by the vocals. I genuinely think this is one of the best goth metal bands, and if you like the vocals, I think it's super easy to see why. That being said, they are very unique vocals, even for metal, so and despite it being the strongest part of their music to me, to many it may be the ... read more
Genuinely one of the best artists of all time. Sure there were some stinkers everyone once in a while, but who cares!
This album is incredible, it's remarkable how reflective this album is, and while he's clearly matured over the course of the career the spirit of what always made him great is still present here, just wrapped under a lot more introspection.
For some reason this album seems to just get glossed over whenever talking about Gojira's best. It's a very different listen than from mars to sirius, but I think it compares very well to way of all flesh. Don't get me wrong, I love all 3. But I would put this as potentially the best. Between this and TWAF, I'd argue this is significantly more replayable. TWAF has some crazy powerful songs, but I think pound for pound this album just delivers more for me. I just think of ... read more
