The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
100
Mars Volta really took the long, winding song structures & musical wankery of prog and gave it the feeling of urgency of a post hardcore record, with a dash of Latin influences & sound experimentation. Frances the Mute holds itself up as one of the most impactful modern prog releases. Everything feels so cohesive between passages in each track and in the transitions from track to track. The writing from the Mars Volta is so adventurous & exciting, probably the best out of their ... read more

Mount Eerie - Now Only

I like how this works more as a continuation of where the last LP left off. Looking at how his wife now fits into his life and less on reflecting what he lost. Phil's lyrics are the best thing about their project bar none, songs like "Earth" deceive the listener with the horrific discovery of Phil finding his wife's bones above the surface of where she was buried. Causing reflection on what bones these fragments may have made up. How these bones made up the pieces of her that created ... read more

He’s really living up to his name on this one.
Officially the “good vibes” album of the year.
Delta Sleep - Twin Galaxies

Some real highlights to be found, but Delta Sleep's first record is a bit to rough around the edges & musically tedious to be considered a great album in my eyes

Best Songs: Strongthany, Spy Dolphin. Lake Sprinkle Sprankle

Toe - For Long Tomorrow

Toe successfully evolved from the roots laid out by "The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety". Maintaining and improving their core math/post rock style, whilst incorporating a heavier focus on atmosphere & guitar work. This change does not leave Kashikura out in the dust, he has plenty of moments to shine all throughout this project. The synergy is just on a whole other level here. Toe has never sounded more full of life!

Bright Eyes - Digital Ash in a Digital Urn: A Companion

Holy shit now this is how you remaster an album!

I have admittedly not been the biggest fan of Bright Eyes’s recent efforts to retread over their old catalogue with these new companion albums. I find most of them to be rather tedious releases with lackluster production & uninventive songwriting, that was until this one came along…

In what seems to be Bright Eyes attempt to say “hey we know you guys hated that electronic phase we went through but we promise these were ... read more
