I'm fairly new to jazz, and what really drew me in was this baller cover, but I assume this isn't anything great—simply well-made bop.
Jacob Collier is an interesting thinker. He's a philosopher of art who believes in the power of unbridled creativity. He's so obsessed with this idea of creativity that his albums become more like a tragic collage of train wrecks and fires, all mixed and mastered in the most 2-dimensional way imaginable. It's so incredibly uninspired and genuinely offensive in the way so many talented cultural voices are given the spotlight, only for Jacob to smother their contributions with ... read more
I listened to this album simply because this was one of the most amazing album covers I have ever seen, and knowing absolutely nothing about the music, I am honestly disappointed. The 80s' electronic sound wasn't bad... but it wasn't very good either. I thought it was very mediocre and dry for the era it came from, and it doesn't hold up much today.
A very engaging listen, as Yasmin utilizes the talents of fellow artists to bolster each track, blending primitivism, rock, R&B, and jazz.
The more projects The Alchemist puts out, the more I think I develop burnout on his abstract, drumless style, but this project is something I consistently go back to to remind myself how much I love this kind of hip hop. Earl's vibe just makes him own of the best rappers I've ever heard.
An uncanny mystery. I feel like the cover says it all: vast, cold, peaceful.
A gorgeous romp through somber and whimsical American folk with droning flirtations that add a sense of adventurous curiosity and dread.
While the sound isn't anything novel, for a debut project, Wisp puts on an excellent show. If Not Winter is composed of heavy, distorted riffs, psychedelic melodies, occasionally cathartic performances, and a keen sense of good structure. Nevertheless, Wisp has plenty of room to experiment and grow, being such a young artist.
I appreciate some of the experimentation on the production, but like... oof this was such a rough listen. I hope Randy is just friends with this guy and isn't actually cosigning the music as a featured artist.
Devon's production is sharp and fresh, some of the best of her career, but I can't help but wish there was more meat in this project.
The styles of Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo clash in a way that surprisingly doesn't sound all that bad, and Reneé's performances are occasionally explorative and consistently impressive.
The Alchemist builds a sinister world around the gangster whimsy of Freddie Gibbs, making some of the most memorable hip-hop music I've ever heard.
A sharp sequel to one of the greatest cult classic modern hip-hop records. Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist bring their talents to the forefront, but it is yet to be seen whether they've captured lightning in a bottle a second time.
This record is just absolutely stunning. A mash of so many genres with clear groovy production. It's so clear how this has inspired some of my favorite modern-day music.
Some of Future's best solo work. I love the Halloween ass colors on the cover and the title. Listening to this, I just imagine Future smoking with Gandalf.
Listening to this after Jackboys 2 is like hearing a song from heaven.
Love this record. It's clever, banger country writing with plenty of wit and charm. Tyler and Sturgill are a dream team.
I appreciate some progressive country. I would have preferred this over something bland like other country releases this year. I think Rick Rubin's production is a highlight, but the experimentation just doesn't land in the realm of sonically pleasing to me. I much prefer Sturgill's production when it comes to Tyler projects, but that's just because I'm a Sturgill glazer.
Country that's classy as heck. Sierra Ferrel is so charming, both being a disembodied voice of reason and a heartbroken victim of her own.
"God could have thought up a better way to teach me just how small I am."
The person to review this before me said, "You can feel the humidity off this one", and I love how that was put. It's a sharply written, slow-burning country record with cutting lyrics and some production choices that perk up my ears.
