DOUBT hits home so hard ๐
You know, I always say that Jeff is fun to listen to. But once you look at the lyrics, you get the exact opposite of fun. Most of his songs question our existence and why we're here. On HELLMODE, he puts his midlife crisis in the spotlight. While Jeff is still fun and full of energy, the lyrics are more personal, talking about life and how some things have to end. Jeff did have some personal lyrics before, but it was more about feeling worried. Here, he's questioning what he's doing is worth all his time. He's basically doubting his whole career and life in general. And became he's more in his feelings, the instrumentation on this album is tame and slow paced. I really love this change because it makes the climax on each track hit that much harder. DOUBT is one of those tracks that hits hard, both instrumentally and personally. On this track, Jeff is telling either us or himself to kill all the doubt. Of course, as someone who feels so much doubt from time to time, it's easier said than done. But this makes me feel like I can get through this feeling of doubt, especially in the end. I WANNA BE WRONG is another track I love. While it feels good to be right, sometimes being wrong feels more safe and comforting, especially in relationships. This song truly puts in perspective why sometimes being wrong is better than being right. The instrumentation on this track is also amazing. In my mind, it represents the fast thoughts you have when you're right on something bad happening. The final track, 3 SUMMERS, perfectly concludes the album. It's Jeff basically coming into terms with him being different than before. Everyone doesn't stay the same, but that's okay. The only thing we can do is get through it and hope for the best. Overall, HELLMODE is a great album that amazingly shows the hell some people go through in life, whether it's failing at love or simply getting old and losing time.
