Sampha - Lahai
90

Well shit, I don't have an opening line for this album :(

I've only heard Sampha as a feature on Kendrick's MMTBS and Travis' UTOPIA, but I really enjoyed those moments from him. His singing is absolutely gorgeous, so I decided to give this album a try, having high expectations. On my first listen, I wasn't impressed. I obviously loved Samphas vocals, but I thought the production was kind of bland and all over the place, not really going anywhere or having those ... read more

Jane Remover - Census Designated
90

Jane Remover really removed every ounce of cum from my balls

Admittedly, I was scared going into this album. An hour long album seems like a lot, which I know is hypocritical for me to say, considering that I've listened to 2 hour albums before without batting an eye. Still, it just had me worry. But yeah, I feel like a fucking idiot to worry. Census Designated is freaking awesome. On this album, Jane shies away from the hyper pop that was on Frailty and goes for a more shoegaze sound. While ... read more

Westside Gunn - Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B
80

When was the last time the Side B of an album was better than Side A?

HWH 8 SB is hands down the best album in the series and of Westside's best albums. While I thought Side A was pretty good, Side B is on a whole other level. It's very different from everything Westside released before, sounding kind of abstract. It gives me JPEGMAFIA vibes, which I know is cringe to say, but that's how I feel. I've said this before, but this album also sounds like a vintage movie, especially because of the ... read more

Why didn't we get this on ATYPFM?

After listening to And Then You Pray For Me, I was scared to listen to Pray for Paris. While I did see that it was much shorter, I still believed that some of the tracks were just going to be filler. Boy, was I wrong. This shit is way better than what ATYPFM was. Pray for Paris really feels like a work of art, pun intended. I love how low-key the album is. There isn't really any heavy production on this album, which helps make the feature and lyrics more ... read more

Westside Gunn - Supreme Blientele
80

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! (Soulfully and softly)

Westside really said "Fuck it. Let's make some some jazzy and soulful shit." Supreme Blientele is just Westside doing his thing, but over some soulful ass production. I really love this change up. Westside easily eats up the production, creating some of my favorite tracks from him. GODS Don't Bleed alone gives us a taste of what's to come. The production is so smooth and chill, but that doesn't stop Westside, Benny, and ... read more

Westside Gunn - FLYGOD

Now this is what I expected from Westside

After the disappointing album that was And Then You Pray For Me, I decided to go back and check out some of Westside's better rated albums. For me, I felt like I wasn't getting the full Westside experience. And thank God I did. Speaking of God, FLYGOD is a hell of an amazing album. This album is full of amazing production, energy, lyrics, and features. There also aren't any trap beats, which is a win for me. This album doesn't waste any time giving ... read more

MIKE - Burning Desire
80

Colin is right. MIKE really saved the day

If it weren't for MIKE, this would've been the most underwhelming day for hip-hop. While Burning Desire is just MIKE doing his usual thing, it still sounds pretty damn good. The jazz incorporated in the production is amazing. It just makes the album more viby and chill. Even though he's done this plenty of times already, the muddy samples are still great. Like the album cover, it makes the album sound vintage, which is really cool. MIKE'S penmanship on ... read more

Westside Gunn - And Then You Pray For Me
60

Who the hell told Westside Gunn he could rap over a trap beat? 😭

I've heard Westside Gunn as a feature so many times, to the point where I can not mistake him if he's featured on a track. I've always loved the energy and adlibs he brings on a track, so I was really excited going into this album. Sadly, though, And Then You Pray For Me is the definition of a mixed bag. Half of the tracks are amazing and have fantastic production and performances from Westside Gunn and the features. Half of ... read more

Offset - SET IT OFF

It's an album all right

I didn't really have any plans listening to SET IT OFF, but after I saw some praise for it on Twitter, I thought maybe we had something special right here. In a way, I was basically clickbaited. I came out of this album extremely underwhelming and disappointed. Maybe it's on me for me not understanding what sound Offset is usually in, but I didn't find anything special about this album. It's not bad, but it's not amazing either. It's just middle of the road music. I ... read more

Ken Carson - A Great Chaos
50

At least it's better than X

I honestly had some some high hopes for this new album. While I absolutely hated X, seeing the high praise for A Great Chaos gave me hope that Ken was going in a different direction and was giving us something special. Maybe I shouldn't have had high hopes, because this album is not good. There are a few things this album has going for it. One, it's better than X, which I see as a win. Two, the production is somewhat better. It's not as chaotic ... read more

MIKE - "Disco!"
80

Really Brief Review:

You know what's difficult about reviewing albums like this. They're good, but it's pretty much the same thing. That's not a diss at MIKE. It's just that this type of music is hard to add additional thoughts to. Still, Disco! is another great album. I like the soulful and jazzy samples on this album and the more heavy drum loops. I also like the more imaginary lyrics MIKE spits. Overall, Disco! is another great album from MIKE. What else can I say? It's just some good shit ... read more

MIKE - MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE
80

Brief Review:

MIKE is basically Earl Sweatshirt if he dropped albums frequently

I don't know what got me into checking out MIKE, but I decided to give him a listen since he's dropping an album tomorrow. I thought May God Bless Your Hustle would be a good to start with. And you know what, this album is pretty darn good. Nothing took me by total surprise, but I really liked the whole vibe of the album. Also, I'm a sample whore, so there's that. I really like how messy the album sounds. To me, ... read more

nathanchko - 4TRK

I just found it okay. I heard all the songs featured on 4TRK and kept thinking to myself, "I can hear all these songs in better quality." I did like the switch ups this song took. That's the one thing that was keeping my attention. Overall, not bad, but it just felt like a Youtube mash-up. Still, thank you Nathan for sharing your track with me :)

Quadeca - SCRAPYARD I

Nothing too crazy in my opinion, but they're still some good quality tracks. I especially love the production on U DON'T KNOW ME LIKE THAT

Drake - For All The Dogs
40

Really Brief Review:

Nothing: The Album

FATD is the definition of a nothing album. It's not bad. It's not good. It's just there. Has some cool production, but that's about it. I couldn't even remember lines Drake said or what the tracks sound like. I'd say the best track on this album is 8am in Charlotte. Overall, this album is nothing

Earl Sweatshirt & The Alchemist - VOIR DIRE [Streaming Version]
80

Brief Review:

Short, sweet, and simple, like my girlfriend... that I don't have πŸ₯²

I'm glad this album is finally on Spotify. I know this isn't the original, but I don't really care. I'm just glad that I can finally listen to it. While Voir Dire isn't anything revolutionary or new, the vibe of the album is immaculate. Obviously, the production is great. I mean, this is The Alchemist we're talking about. I like how dusty it sounds, especially the drums. The samples are also great. They make ... read more
