Gorillaz - The Fall

The Fall is an interesting idea ruined by the lack of expansion upon said idea. Had this been more than just Damon Albarn futzing with his iPad in between shows while on tour (for an infinitely better album, might I add), this could've been something really cool. Maybe if he got multiple people on iPads in studio all recording at once to maintain the natural and organic quality of the sound that would've been really cool. Instead it just sounds like a bunch of GarageBand demos that Damon occasionally sang over (or in the case of The Joplin Spider, just him pressing random buttons). I actually find it quite funny that this is the only cover of theirs that shows any of the band members in a studio setting and around instruments because its also the only one where that isn't the case during the actual recording.

The worst thing is that there is nothing Gorillaz about it. Every one of their releases has some lore around it as to how each character ended up involved in it and some story that relates to the concept. All of them except The Fall. This is most likely because not even they cared about it all too much. I wish Damon had just released this one under his own solo name because it lacks any connection to the band whose name is lazily slapped on it.

Overall, The Fall lacks any sense of cohesion, understanding of itself, the idea behind the band claiming to be producing it and its intent as a musical work, and a presence of . I wish people who said the same about Humanz would go back and give this a listen to remind themselves that it could've been much worse.

Best Tracks: Revolving Doors, HillBilly Man

Weakest Track: The Joplin Spider

100% agree, to think that some Gorillaz fans thought this was their best album
