I remember about 2 weeks ago when this record was announced, I got immensely hyped because of the amazing artwork. Then Friday hit—"All My Favorite Songs" told me that this was just going to be another forgettable Weezer release. I had the slightest of hope that the rest of the record would be better than that single, but aside from "Numbers", that simply wasn't the case. Almost every track except for the one I enjoyed can simply be summarized with one word: uninteresting. I can barely remember most of this fucking album and I *just* listened to it.
If I am to be positive/explain why I gave it a 58 instead of a lower score, I find the actual orchestral elements to be very pleasant on the ears. The album is well produced and gives the organic instruments room to thrive in these (admittedly very bland) compositions. I also think Rivers' willowy voice perfectly fits these more delicate and grand tracks. The record also doesn't drag at all considering it's a brief 30 minutes.
However, as a whole, Weezer just once again bring little to the table. I'm not going to say any of this album sounds like AJR (it doesn't at all, what are some of y'all smoking) but I will say that it sounds derivative of other pop records. It's not bad by any means, but I have little to no reason to return to it. Nothing offensive, but not really worth your time.
FAVORITE: Numbers
