Every time I listen to this album, I find myself hoping that this will be the time that I finally enjoy Electioneering enough to say that this album is in fact a 10, but unfortunately I don’t think that day will ever come. It’s kinda infuriating cause without that song, this is one of the greatest rock albums ever made hands down, but unfortunately that one song is enough to say that the album as a whole can’t enter into the coveted 10/10 spot that it so clearly aspires ... read more
A very lowkey album, Julie Is Her Name delivers a set of incredibly soft and smooth tracks that are altogether catchy in their production and have great performances from Julie London. Maybe a little too soft for my liking, I felt almost sleepy throughout most of the album, but I still had a good time with this, just might not be jumping to re-listen to this anytime soon.
This is way better than Elvis. Little Richard is basically doing the same thing as Elvis with the rock and roll (or actually it’d be more accurate to say Elvis is doing Little Richard since he stole his entire thing from him), but where Little Richard has Elvis beat is with his soaring vocals. These are some of the most passionate performances I’ve ever heard to date. Couple that with the great classic sound of this record and I’m choosing Richard over Elvis any day, no ... read more
Unless I go crazy I’m probably not going to be listening to any other albums from Mr. Presley any time soon, mainly because he followed the mantra that was all too popular in the 50s - quantity over quality. Credit where it’s due I like Blue Suede Shoes, but every other song on this album was either an imitation of that or a bland slow song. I also think that this album has aged pretty poorly on the production side of things. I want to give it some credit for its age, and I will, ... read more
This is just so much fun. An album that basically makes me feel like I need to go find a desert so I can drive around it while listening to this for a while, Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs delivers on exactly what you would expect out of an album from the 50's with that title. Obviously there's the iconic songs like Big Iron and El Paso, but I also found myself really loving the story-telling on tracks like Billy the Kid and They're Hanging Me Tonight. I do fear that the ... read more
I know that Michael Jackson existed prior to this album, but I choose to believe that when he yells at the beginning of Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, that is a literal representation of the heavens parting and Michael descending from on high, bringing with him everything that made him Michael Jackson. This album rocks. The first four tracks are all incredible, songs like Rock with You and Workin' Day and Night are the kind of thing dreams are made of. The second half of the ... read more
Gorillaz’ most pop sounding album, but not really in an interesting way. Most of the songs here are just sugary but flavorless, with a few random stand outs here and there. I don’t dislike the album, but try as I might I don’t really like it either. Also the artwork is hideous.
Lowkey a little disappointed, most of this album is at best a little boring and at worst very corny for a man in his forties to be singing about. There’s some really solid bass playing throughout and I like the song with Mac Miller a lot, but that doesn’t save the fact that this album is pretty lame all things considered.
Ngl I kinda forgot this came out after BULLY dropped. Boring and forgettable unfortunately, especially for me as the world’s #1 A DANGEROUS SUMMER enjoyer. Yeat is always all over the place, I hope he can get his act together and start making stuff that’s both good and marketable. He has it in him I know it.
Really fun and funky album, basically every song had really good production and it more or less just came down to the performances and song structure that determined if I liked it. I feel like if this album and The Now Now were combined then that album would be peak easy.
Kanye’s return after the whole Vultures thing is kinda just sad to see. This isn’t a confident Kanye coming back guns blazing to remind the world who he is, this is a scared Kanye. This is a Kanye who knows that everything he has is over if this album is met with any criticism at all. This is a Kanye you can ignore. There’s a few good songs here, nothing great but I can see others being a bit more hype than I am about songs like KING and FATHER. Still doesn’t change the ... read more
Note: Much like with DONDA 2, the tracklist here has been changed a bit, and FIELD TRIP has been taken down from Spotify so I used local files for that one. I listened to the album in the order that it is listed under here on AOTY
Actually no nvm VULTURES 1 truly is the worst album of all time. I seem to remember hearing that Kanye had gone back and made changes to VULTURES 2, but I didn’t expect this to literally be a different album than it was when it first came out. The first 1/3rd ... read more
What was I on in 2024. This redux has been needed for a while, after VULTURES 2 dropped I gave up on Kanye and everything he did post-Donda, and that left VULTURES 1 here in a strange place cause previously I LIKED this thing. It was entirely delusion I fear, and now that we’re two years removed from the project and the discourse surrounding it has bubbled down, I can confidently say that this album is horrible. Unfinished, unmixed, racist, and just downright horrible across the board. ... read more
Note: The tracklist for this album is weird and inconsistent, but I listened to the tracklist that is written out on AOTY. I used the Spotify release where possible for a lot of the tracks and then downloaded the rest through local files. This meant that some of the songs had worse mixing than others, but I still believe that my opinion on the album should be in tact.
With the release of BULLY, I felt a need to go back and cover all the post Donda stuff that Kanye has put out, starting with ... read more
This is kind of the album I feel like Gorillaz needed to make, very few features (which is a blessing for this band) and just an overall happy vibe make this album a fun, albeit a tad uninteresting album. It definitely has a better grasp of electro pop than Humanz did, and there weren't any songs that I actively disliked on this project, its just that overall this album is kinda just the status quo for a nice simple album that isn't trying to go above and beyond.
I read a review that said ‘there’s barely any Gorillaz on this Gorillaz album’ and that pretty much sums up one of the key flaws with this record. 2-D feels like he is featuring on his own songs for the most part here, which results in the album feeling like a DJ Khaled project. Artists trying to prop up other artists through features is not a bad thing, but at the expense of your own artistry being thrown to the side is so lame. Beyond that (debatably) nitpicky point however, ... read more
You know it’s bad for me as a Kid Cudi fan when I’m celebrating this. First track was great, rest was kinda mid ngl. I’m not a huge EP fan, but I’ll listen to anything Kid Cudi puts out that isn’t Free.
I love James Blake's vocals, they're so unique and when paired with his signature spacey vibes they really come together to create an album that sounds like you are soaring through the cosmos with every listen. There are some serious highlights of the year for me on this album, Walk Out Music, Death of Love, Trying Times, and Doesn't Just Happen are all fantastic. Total banger of an album. This is honestly the music that I wish Joji was making.
Not sure why everyone hates this album so much. It's lowkey and vibey, nothing special but perfectly fine I guess. Sauceless and plain maybe, but fine and inoffensive. Color me a little disappointed actually. I mean, apathy is a tragedy I guess but I wasn't really bored by the album, although it being less than 30 minutes is probably why. Idk, I really can't come up with anything to say about it other than that it's fine.
I see why so many people enjoy this album, but I found for myself that I just didn't click with every song in the same way that so many people seem to. Still, what's good is quite good and I like the concept and message of the album for the most part. It's a great album and I see why it's considered such a classic.
