It's tough to declare which of Steely Dan's albums is their best, but Aja takes the top spot for me, barely beating out Can't Buy a Thrill and The Royal Scam in that order.
Aja kicks off with the opener "Black Cow", a regional slang term for a root beer float. This track is a pretty straightforward jazz-rock tune that is really carried by Paul Humphrey on drums who sets up the band for each dramatic hit at the chorus. Speaking of the chorus, it would be nothing without those ... read more
This was frustrating to listen to. Django Django obviously has some good ideas, but anytime they were presented it was at the wrong time or in a strange way that didn't make sense or it just wasn't executed well enough. I'm really not sure what the feeling or idea they're trying to convey with this album is. It sounds like they just had a bunch of song fragments and finished them up and threw them on an album rather than creating music over a set period of time with a vision in mind. Maybe they ... read more
My first meeting with The Weather Station was a pleasant one and I wish that it would have come sooner. With this album's wide ranging instrumentation, catchy melodic lines, and Tamara Lindeman's unique vocals, it will surely be one that I'll be revisiting at the end of this year.
Robber kicks off this album slowly at first and eventually grows as instruments are added into the mix. Most notably is the sax that makes a few interjections early on followed by a quick solo for a few bars. The ... read more
I feel like this album gets pushed to the wayside because of how poplar Stop Making Sense is, but it's always been one of my favorite Talking heads projects. Compared to Stop Making Sense, this album brings more raw energy and is a caps off the first half of their career perfectly.
I looked up where they recorded this and most of the songs were recorded in New York, New Jersey and Tokyo. I guess it was the original album cover, but I was always had a vision of the band recording this in front ... read more
This is my first review on AOTY, so I thought I would start with one of my favorites from 2020.
I wasn't very familiar with Phoebe before Punisher, but after listening to this record nonstop I went back through to Stranger in the Alps and her other side projects.
On my first listen through of Punisher I was captivated by Kyoto because of the catchy tune, the horn lines and Phoebe's singing which isn't always as powerful as it is in that song. After going back to it time and time again, it's ... read more
